Free Agency 2010: First Days Thread

I've never heard so much of nothing since the Brett Favre fiasco(s). Use this as your landing pad for all free agency news, rumors, links, gossip, giggling, enjoyment, sadness, perusal, dance moves, and Sinbad standup favorites. I'm going to choose not to report any of this because it is hullabaloo. And I don't tolerate hullabaloo.

Nothing is going to happen with the Sixers, so don't get your hopes up. Enjoy the parade of ESPN experts marching on and off your television sets. Are they still called television sets?

Anyway.

I didn’t know it was already picked up but not picking it up from a penny pinching organization like the sixers makes no sense – he’s still cheap – they still have to have 13 under contract.

What I find interesting is all the media writing hwo the sixers would go after ‘back court’ in free agency – which makes no sense to me.

“The Timberwolves and Clippers engage in a ridiculous bidding war for Rudy Gay, and the winner ends up signing him to what basically amounts to a max contract. The loser decides to trade for Andre Iguodala instead. Failing that, the loser trades for Luol Deng.”

This is his prediction, as a hypothetical, anyone interest you from either of these teams to replace Andre? I’d be interested in Eric Gordon of the Clippers to play the 2 and move Turner to the 3. Thoughts?

On ESPN tonight on the show they were saying the clippers wanted Iggy at the deadline last yr. I would not mind that at all. As said earlier, on here, if a team loses out on Johnson, or Gay, there could be some interest. It does have the 3 yrs with the player option left but these teams would be offering 4 yr guaranteed contracts to players on open market.

by jemagee on Jul 1, 2010 6:35 AM PDT up reply actions

They can send Baron Davis to be reunited with his good buddy Elton Brand on the Sixers bench.

Seriously, I’m not sure what their roster looks like. They won’t send Kaman or Griffin or Gordon. Do they have any massive expiring contracts? I don’t know what else they might have that would be appealing.

by dweebowitz on Jul 1, 2010 6:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Yea which is why it did not work with LA during season. I was just stating the reason teams would be interested and would not mind it at all, if there was any possibility. I was not saying it would work.

From what I can gather, the only expiring contracts the clippers have are DeAndre Jordan and Collins (if he accepts an qualifying offer). They are not trading their starters as the Clippers have cap space and believe with the guys they have they can compete and be good with a scoring SF. I don’t believe, as its the clippers, but the clippers believe it.

Yea but they want a proven scoring SF aka Iggy, so they would have to throw in picks along with maybe Al-Farouq Aminu

Hmm.. how about DeAndre Jordan, Aminu, 2011 and 2013 1st rounders?+ The rest of the cap space would create a trade exception for the 76ers to use (almost as good as cap space-esp when otehrs are trying to dump some salary) .

by shova on Jul 1, 2010 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions

They won’t give up Gordon. He’s a major part of their “young core” that they’re trying to build.

I would be OK with the deal without Gordon. Two 1sts from the Clips is value right there, Jordan is still very young and has some raw talent, and who knows what Aminu is…a couple of months ago, we all were assuming he’d be a Sixer, and were less than horrified about it, if I remember. So maybe it’s worth it to roll the dice with him.

This way, they get Aminu and Turner (not a bad haul, if they had drafted that way), a developmental big with some upside, and two likely-to-be-pretty-good 1sts.

I like Iguodala a lot, and would prefer he stay. But since it’s unlikely that there will be a contending roster in place when Iguodala’s contract runs out, perhaps they should examine what they could get in trade for him now that he is more or less at peak value.

by dweebowitz on Jul 1, 2010 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions

If you’re unhappy having Turner and Iguodala because neither of them are 3-point shooters, why get Aminu, who is a far worse shooter?

That doesn’t bother me as much as it bothers some people. Jrue seems to be able to knock down the three, and I think Turner will be OK. Not spectacular, but OK.

I don’t want them to turn into some kind of weird Toronto variant, where the entire team is 3-point shooters and they just sit out at the perimeter the whole game. That’s obviously not what they’re about. Nor should it be. They need to have enough three-point shooting where opposing defenses can’t pack the lane. I believe they’ll have that.

Besides, there’s always the Jodiac Killer :)

David Lee will probably go back to new york cause new york won’t get anyone else, amybe add felton and salmons and try and sell that they fit the d’antoni style.

i agree to disagree

hullabaloo is a little extreme. the only reason this is getting this much coverage is because this is one of the most interesting stories in sporting history, affecting many futures of players/teams/cities.

people i like who like the nba are beginning to tire of the situation as well. turn off things for a while. your tv, your realgm.com, your blackberry. regardless of the perception of the hype, the storyline is 1000000 times bigger than the coverage, its just the manner of coverage can get to be too much.

there are also a lot of insane contracts being doled out to other players, not just stars. the whole process has been amazing and perplexing, and i expect it get more of both of those descriptions.

heard some ‘dot connecting’ (old time online phillies fans know what i’m talking about) that put scott to the cavs as coach the first step in the cavs obtaining paul.

sam smith (author of “the jordan rules”) said the same thing yesterday – said scott going to cleveland was the first action in what will lead to lebron re-signing and the cavs working out something to obtain paul

who cares about lequeen? Sick of hearing about him. He’s going to wind up another AI. Adored by fans, can score, etc, but no rings. Im opinion. He’s too concerned about himself and his inflated ego to care about anything else. Pretty sad day for us all, when the media hypes all this about one man, that shoots hoops, and wants to be the next biillinaire athtele. Its just shallow. The owners at at fault too, i can hear john saying something. And yes we all feed they hype, etc. Its insane.

If AI could rebound, defend, or pass as well as LeBron then I’d say you have a point. If he had any sort of supporting cast he may already have a title. This offseason is his chance to demand that supporting cast that he needs.

by yosoysean on Jul 3, 2010 1:20 AM PDT up reply actions

lequeen will not have a supporting cast until he’s got wade, and bosh. So tired of hearing he hasnt had anything. Im sure MJ was lookiing for Larry to win his championships

by mothergoose on Jul 7, 2010 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions

what would be really funny, is if wade, bosh and lequeen all did get togehter and got beat by a basketball team. Kinda like the florida marlins or tb rays in baseball. I read the whole team doesnt or is close to making as much as a-rod.

by mothergoose on Jul 2, 2010 4:06 PM PDT reply actions

i love basketball guys, but this is getting way out of hand, has been out hand. Its a stockbrockers fest instead of the game we love. Money, can and does truly ruin some things. Peace.

You’re right, the NFL is truly suffering with all those billions of dollars rolling in.

by jemagee on Jul 2, 2010 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions

its the game and fans that sufffer. Fans are dumb enough to attend it. I love sports, specailly basketball, but anyone with common sense can see its out of hand.

Yeah, you’re right, all the historical evidence to the contrary – but you’re right.

Interesting read

If West and Fisher are representative of the over all players thinking, it’s just ridiculous

by jemagee on Jul 2, 2010 4:27 PM PDT reply actions

fisher. I can see. I like derek fisher. He’s down to earth. Seems level headed. If I was a player, I wouldnt mind him representing. Dereks a class act. Also a big flopper, but thats another tag.

Did you actually READ the article and see how out of touch he is with reality?

by jemagee on Jul 2, 2010 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions

i dont think hes out of touch with reality. I can see his point. Who wants to make less money and who wants to be cut if they get injured or make less money if the get injured. All the suggestions sound good for the league and i agree with them but i really cant see the players going along with it its not good for them as a whole

by killacaravagio on Jul 3, 2010 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Not having games isn’t good for the players, they don’t get paid during a lock out I don’t think

some of you guys were right. Iguadolas. contract is high, but not nearly of whats out there now. So, philly should keep him now. He’s improving his shot and will be better.

by mothergoose on Jul 2, 2010 4:47 PM PDT reply actions

No, it’s not high…it’s a fair contract

by jemagee on Jul 2, 2010 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions

So the lakers signed steve blake for 4 years at less than the MLE.

Probably one year as a back up and then he ends up the starter with the new coach after Phil (and fish) retire…if he pans out that’s a pretty shrewd signing.

by jemagee on Jul 2, 2010 5:54 PM PDT reply actions

yep, smart deal for lakers.

Here's how it looks

Bosh – Miami
Wade – Miami
Joe Johnson – Atlanta
Amare – NYC
Rudy Gay – Mem
Dirk – Dal
Pierce – Bos

Lee, Boozer, LBJ still to come out of the big names. I had Amare staying in Phoenix, but besides that I’m relatively solid on the big boys.

Turkoglu headed to Phoenix for Barbosa.

Childress also headed to Phoenix in S&T with Atlanta and 2nd round pick.

Just heard that while watchin a summer league game, no link yet.

Does anyone else feel like the Sixers are going backwards without doing a thing?

I wonder when Iguodala is going to wake up and look at the roster and ownership and ask to be traded.

Honestly, my hopes for next season are that; Jrue bucks the recent trend trend of Sixers draft picks and continues to develop, Turner does adapt his game to the NBA and proves me wrong, and the Sixers suck big time and land another top 3 draft pick for a good big man. Will there be a dominant big man in next years draft? man I hope so.

Never too early to look at next year’s draft!!! The ideas are swimming in my membranes. It’ll be up at some point in the next few weeks.

Yeah, I’ve already had a look at DraftExpress 2011 mock draft. At this stage, it’s full of college soon to be freshmen and international players, oh and Mason Plumlee.

My best case draft pick scenario for the Sixers is probably Perry Jones and my worst case scenario would be Enes Kanter. Any worse than Kanter and you know we’re not going to be relevent for a very, very long time.

by briztoon on Jul 13, 2010 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions

After your post in the other thread depressed me further :-), I decided to do the same thing… (actually I had done it once before as well..but I revisited it)..also checked out nbadraft.net who i like too.

We may be too “good” to get Jones (though he’d be my preference – seems like a Durant clone)

And even maybe “too good” for Kanter (nbadraft has him at 5 or so). So, as far as 4/5’s after them – Trey Thompkins looks interesting, maybe Aaric Murray for some Philly flava if we get a later pick too. Maybe we can get some extra picks – like if/when they trade ’Dre.

Sullinger is interesting since he has some girth (and some athletism) to bang with some of the bigger boys, like Dwight Howard, Glen Davis, yada yada.

But it seems like there wil be some size available….ugh – I cant believe I am laready looking at next year… depressing.

I started looking at next year’s draft as soon as we got the #2 pick and it was (almost) certain we’d get Turner ;)
