Orlando Summer League Schedule Released; Sixers to Play in First Game

I'm not sure if we completely knew this beforehand but it is official that the Philadelphia 76ers will be represented this summer in the 2010 AirTran Airways Pro Summer League in Orlando, FL.  The best part about this news?  They are generating an entire team!  No more of this sharing a roster nonsense with the Nets like last year.  So now we'll get to see our young prospects on the floor without looking over and finding Chris Douglas-Roberts jacking up contested shots left and right.

Check out the entire schedule over at the Pride of Bismarck's page (Ridiculous Upside).  Also make your way over there for updates on the New Jersey workouts currently taking place which the Sixers are attending.  Maybe some light will be shed on whether a second round pick is anywhere in our future.

The Sixers will participate in the first game of the event July 5 against their teammates from last year.  Other teams participating in the Orlando summer league are, of course, the Orlando Magic, Indiana Pacers, Charlotte Bobcats, Utah Jazz, Boston Celtics, and Oklahoma City Thunder.

After the jump see which players I feel should be on the roster for the summer league squad.

Star-divide

1. Jrue Holiday

2. Jodie Meeks

3. Thaddeus Young

4. Marreese Speights

5. Jason Smith

6. Lou Williams (although I doubt he'll want to participate considering he's getting MVP this season)

7. Insert 1st round pick here (Evan Turner? Derrick Favors?)

8. Insert possible 2nd round pick here (Trevor Booker? - this of course hoping they purchase one or ship Willie's bum in exchange)

9. Tanner Steidel

This isn’t new news but it’s good to talk about. I wish they were going to vegas as well just to get more time.

What yo uneglected to list was that COLLINS should coach this

Do you think Thad would want to do this? I’m not saying he shouldn’t, just not sure he would

by The Legend on Jun 10, 2010 8:25 AM PDT reply actions

i think with him being in a contract year he’ll want to anything he can to improve – especially after his performance last season

I don’t think Young, Speights, nor Lou do summer league. We’ll pick up a few UFA’s and plug them in to see how they play.

i think Young and Speights need to do it just about more than anyone – whether they wil or not is different

I’ve always liked Booker. He’s a tough kid with some actual offensive game and really goes after rebounds. If we’re talking early 2nd rounders though, I’d be more partial to somebody like Craig Brackins. I think he’s a stud once he puts it all together. Coming out this year really hurt his draft positioning.

Mikhail Torrance and Matt Bouldin are guys I’d think about if we’re talking mid-2nd. Big backup point guards that, especially Torrance, have a chance to grow and play ball at a high level. And obviously I have some love for Jeremy Wise and Latavious Williams.

when i saw book ran the fastest sprint at the combine i immediately began praying to the god of second round picks (malik rose?) hoping we get one

brackins intrigues me in that he has the potential to be an impact player – he was a projected lottery pick last year and this year at one point but never really put it together – the capacity to do something impressive is there, whether or not he taps into it is the question

That’s why a second round pick for him his perfect. Low risk, tremendous reward if he gets in shape. He’s got a really nice mid-range offensive game and is already wider than Chris Bosh, who his game is kind of modeled after. Could be a nice gamble, or a quick skip to Europe. Regardless he won’t cost much so I’d go for it.

The improvments needed in Speights game (to me) don’t really require a lot of useless summer league games (they don’t play defense) – not sure thad’s do either…would it really HELP them?

by jemagee on Jun 10, 2010 8:31 AM PDT reply actions

you don’t think it would be beneficial for them to put into actual gameplay things they have been working on (assuming they actually have been working on something) during the offseason? with nothing else really going on i can’t see how it would hurt them

Well – if that’s the case – then in the off season players should do nothing but stay immobilized – which of course leads to atrophy and doesn’t help either :)

I’m a huge proponent of atrophy in basketball players offseasons.

Summer League games are a lot like all star games but with more people with something to prove…defense is absent…even with Collins there, the games are primarily showcases for free agents to find jobs…sure jrue played some defense but jrue plays defense (tweeter drinks beer and billy bob is kind of a cry baby) inherently. I don’t believe playing pick up games (which is what I feel summer league are the equivalent of) will be useful to guys like speights and young IF they are dedicated to fixing their flaws

“the games are primarily showcases for free agents to find jobs”

It’s funny because this is true, yet they still don’t play defense. You would think that would be something worth proving.

by jemagee on Jun 11, 2010 7:46 AM PDT up reply actions

Summer league won’t do a lot for Speight’s or Young’s game, but spending time with Collins and working on things under his direction couldn’t hurt. Keeping them busy and in condition is also a good thing.

The Sixers will have a lot of work to do once training camp starts, but anything that can get these players moving in the right direction can’t hurt.

Also, neither Speghts nor Young had great shooting seasons. Taking shots in a Summer league game is better than nothing. This season Speights should become a go-to scorer in the middle, the more he hones those post-moves the better. Besides, Speights is from Fla. anyway.

by RickoT on Jun 11, 2010 9:43 AM PDT up reply actions

I can’t ever recall a Sixers player in the third year of thier rookie contract playing in a Summer League. As far as I can remember it’s always been rookies, second year players and a bunch wannabes or hasbeens with little to no chance of making the team. Occasionally theres a Temple grad that the sixers have thrown a bone to, so he gets some exposure and hopefully impresses any european or asian scouts.

by briztoon on Jun 10, 2010 8:41 AM PDT reply actions

And yet, if Thad could benefit from going to summer league he should – this is a key season for thad and if he doesn’t dedicate himself to being MUCH better – his career is going to be short lived and not as profitable as it seemed a couple years ago.

by jemagee on Jun 10, 2010 8:47 AM PDT up reply actions

No arguement here. I’m just saying I can’t ever remember a Sixers player other than rookies or second year players ever playing a summer league game. I remember all the talk about the work Thad put in between his rookie season and his second year, and being thoroughly underwhelmed by his play during summer league that year.

by briztoon on Jun 10, 2010 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Well since it never happened in yoru memory, you’re right it probably never will happen

by jemagee on Jun 10, 2010 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions

jemagee I’m not disagreeing with you mate. I’d like to see both Speights and Young on the Sixers team. I wonder if there’s some rules about which players teams are allowed to have on thier Summer League teams.

I know every year you hear players who are trying to make a teams preseason squad complain about the presence of rookies and second year players. Basically why are players with guarenteed contracts essentally competing against free agents and undrafted college kids for a chance to make a NBA teams preseason squad.

In other unrelated news but with impact on most people who care about college sports in someway – the big 12 will quite possbly collapse by friday – the big ‘10’ will have 12 teams – the pac 10 will have 16 and most important KANSAS will be conferenceless

That’s what you get for sucking ass at football

by jemagee on Jun 10, 2010 9:03 AM PDT up reply actions

does this shift only relate to football or will it affect all sports? i’ve been following on espn and the way they talk about it makes it seem like it’s only football

"I'm a beast ready to be unleashed." -- Paul George

LibertyBallers : @tsteidel

by Tanner Steidel on Jun 10, 2010 9:05 AM PDT up reply actions

I presumed it affected all sports, the thing i read is that for some reason nebraska is a keystone for the big 12, if nebraska leaves, instead of looking for a 12th team to replace them, would just implode upon itself.

MOST of this realginment is BECAUSE of football (and championship games and regional coverage) but I believe it covers all of them…this isn’t notre dame only being in the big east for basketball…most tv contracts are by conference.

One rumor was that the pac 10 and big 12 would ‘align’ themselves but both exist separately but sell themselves to tv together, but that seems to screw it.

The one ‘prominent’ program that seems screwed is kansas – baylor, iowa state, kansas state and one other i ccan’t remember (colorado state?) aren’t really preeminent powers. I can see colorado state and baylor ending up in the mountain west or something, but where the hell is kansas going to go?

by jemagee on Jun 10, 2010 9:08 AM PDT up reply actions

i think the teams moving to the pac-10 were waiting to see what nebraska did – if nebraska stayed, the others would stay too – that’s what i took out of it but i’m wrong a lot haha

the part that sucks is if baylor loses tv broadcasts for next season – i want to watch as much perry jones as possible!

If my memory serves, these alignment changes would not take effect on the field until the 2011 season, schedules are set too far in advance to make major adjustments – so you’ll still get to see perry jones on big 12 tv next season

by jemagee on Jun 10, 2010 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

I read it is 2012 that the alignment will begin

He’s probably right – 2 years makes more sense as teams lmake schedules uber far in advance

i just know that it’s not THIS season but for fiscal reasons most people expected decisions to be made before june 30th THIS year (most college fiscal years end after the 2nd qtr it turns out)

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=5271438

This article doesn’t say football only but maybe it is – though the pac 10 is a stronger basketball conference usually :)

Interesting that the governor of texas is trying to save baylor – i wonder if he’s an alum

I wondered last night which pac 10 teams would get screwed and sent to the ‘other’ division – i presumed it would be UA or ASU as all the others are ‘on the coast’ and the article confirms that probably would be ut

the two bcs bids is kind of interesting – since the ‘non bcs’ schools are fighting to get automatic bids and you’d now have one super conference getting TWO which would probably motivate the big 10 (will they become the big 12 now) to consider rading the ACC and big east (pretty weak football conferences right now) a bit more to get up to 16 as well – a second bcs bid is quite a bit of caish

by jemagee on Jun 10, 2010 9:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Could Kansas go to the Big Ten? That is the only confernece I can think of right now.

by The Legend on Jun 10, 2010 9:19 AM PDT reply actions

No

1. It would make 13 teams – they don’t want an odd number (they’re taking Nebraska)
2. THEY SUCK AT FOOTBALL usually – the big money is football – these moves are targeted at football schools
3. Nebraska covers the region (tv wise) that hte big 10 wants AND has a natural rivalry (with iowa I’m told that iowa and nebraska hate each other, i’m not sure anyone else in the world cares)

by jemagee on Jun 10, 2010 9:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Nope we don’t. Unless it results in Kansas and Kentucky ending up in the same conference for bball.

by briztoon on Jun 10, 2010 9:28 AM PDT up reply actions

If the Pac 10 gets two BCS bids you gotta think the SEC and BIG 10 will want to expand to 16 as well – but at the same time – Kansas sucks at football – miami and FSU are ‘competetive’ i basketball and better football programs (and would fit better in the SEC) – hell UNC is getting better at basketball.

I expect to see more destruction of conferences with the sec, pac 10 and big 10 getting up to 16

And then of course you’ll have huge BCS domination and the government will get involved and we’re all screwd

by jemagee on Jun 10, 2010 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions

I’d like to formally announce that I am joining the Big 10 conference. TAFKAMB vs. Michigan State is gonna be a nice matchup.

by Michael Levin on Jun 10, 2010 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions

By the way – I totally forgot about conference USA – they could take on some of the sisters of the poor from the big 12 – especially kansas – since they aren’t the greatest football conference in the world either.

If this happens – the acc and big east should think about merging and kicking out the shite schools

by jemagee on Jun 10, 2010 10:08 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m thinking a road trip to Orlando might be in order. I was kinda hoping the Sixers were going to Vegas, though.

by Derek Bodner on Jun 10, 2010 10:48 AM PDT reply actions

I agree and think that if collins is coaching them they should go to both just to get these guys used to playing together under collins system, hell if iguodala wanted to show up to watch/support i’d like that even more (i’m not crazy enough to think sam will work on basketball in the off season)
