Mark Jackson Will Not Interview with Sixers

Per Phil Jasner:

Mark Jackson, the former NBA point guard and current ESPN analyst, has decided to decline an opportunity to interview for the 76ers' coaching job.

The Sixers had been trying to schedule a meeting with Jackson, but Jackson sent word Tuesday that he was trying to determine whether he wanted to proceed. He informed Kauffman today of his decision.

This news does not disappoint me one bit.  It's now official that the 76ers will not have a head coach next year without any coaching experience whatsoever (assuming they don't hire Jaleel White).

Now all the Sixers need is for Mike Breen to turn them down and they'll complete the trifecta.  Let the head coaching search continue with an interview with Jordan's main squeeze Monty Williams.  Fiesta.

Update 11:13 PM

Per Adrian Wojnarowski:

Philadelphia GM Ed Stefanski plans to interview Portland assistant Monty Williams on Monday, league sources say.

Make up your minds! I’m indifferent on Jackson.

Besides not having any coaching experience, Mark Jackson basically played no defense at all as a player. I wasn’t worried about him getting the job, but I’m kind of disappointed that the list of candidates is apparently so influenced by considering guys Stefanski has heard talking on t.v.

It’s not just Stefanski — plenty of teams are interviewing those guys. And it’s not just TV guys. I’m stoked they’re interviewing people like Monty Williams and have Budenholzer on their radar.

I’m kinda disappointed that you made such a silly faulty generalization.

by jemagee on May 6, 2010 7:46 AM PDT up reply actions

What was faulty? Stefanski is considering guys who were t.v. analysts that he probably wouldn’t be considering otherwise. If you and jsams read my comment above as saying he was only considering t.v. analysts then the problem is with your reading skills.

Stefanski is considering guys who were t.v. analysts that he probably wouldn’t be considering otherwise.

You have no idea whether he’d be considering the guys other wise…avery johnson and doug collins may be analysts but they have ‘successful’ track records…i understood what you said fine, i just think it was idiotic to determine that you know how ed stefanski thinks and to ignore the other published candidates who are getting interviews who aren’t on tv.

My opinion is that Stefanski is considering Mark Jackson mainly because of his t.v. work, and that the high percentage of t.v. commentators among the other people interviewed so far suggests that the t.v. gigs create a lot of mind share with Stefanski.

Your opinion, is apparently that Stefanski was incredibly impressed with Mark Jackson’s early 90’s point guard play (including his overreliance on offensive isolation and his inability to guard a potted plant on defense) – so much so that he would consider him as a head coach despite his lack of experience coaching at any level. And your opinion is that the fact that the first two guys interviewed have been prominent doing t.v. work is also just pure coincidence.

My opinion makes more sense than yours.

Sometimes things work out for the best. Five years from now the Sixer bigwigs can sit back, relax, and say, “at least we didn’t hire Mark Jackson.”

btw,
in regards to the all defensive team article on yahoo sports, some of the comments are hilarious. Especially people complaining about Lebron’s supposed inability to defend.
“…all he does is block shots and get cheap steals, I’ve never seen him lock down and opponent…”

by jefu on May 5, 2010 9:40 PM PDT reply actions

LeBron is an inconsistent defender. He gets far more credit for his help D then he deserves and his on-ball defense is often mediocre unless he “feels” like it.

I’m glad this didn’t happen I just didn’t see how it made any sense. I wonder if Aaron McKie is interested yet in being a Head Coach, if they want a young guy he could be a good choice but I have no idea though.

by The Legend on May 5, 2010 10:32 PM PDT reply actions

At least McKie played defense…as would be appropriate for a guy who played for John Chaney…

by dweebowitz on May 6, 2010 2:19 AM PDT up reply actions

McKie has a far better pedigree than Jackson. McKie played for 3 Hall-of-Fame coaches(Chaney, Brown, Phil Jackson) and other quality coaches(Collins, Ellerbee).

Plus Mckee has been getting some credit for Jrue’s quick maturation, especially with his range
