2010 NBA Combine Day 2

At day 2 of the interviews.  Same drill as yesterday, I'll provide paraphrased quotes as much as I can.  Look for a long list of quotes coming tomorrow when I get time to listen to the 8+ hours of audio I'll have recorded during the two day periods.

Currently sitting at a table with Jonathan Givony and John Wall watching the ESPN combine coverage as there's a little downtime in the action.  It's a tough life, I tell ya.

John Wall met with Sixers yesterday

said interview was mainly about character, background, less about basketball.

by Derek Bodner on May 21, 2010 10:24 AM PDT reply actions

The question is, are these interviews like their “coaching search”, where they identified a target long ago and are conducting sham interviews to make it seem like they are doing due diligence?

The Sixers stun the world and select the player they had previously identified as going to them back at 6-7, since they already made up their minds….ladies and gentlemen…Cole Aldrich!

(Yes, I’m kidding)

that’s me taking the picture.

Like I said, tough life.

by Derek Bodner on May 21, 2010 10:41 AM PDT reply actions

Wow. Those heights are low w/o shoes.

Are the measurements w/ shoes the ones that are shown? I don’t know if this is a really dumb question. I thought Aldrich was a “legit” 7-footer. I guess not.

by philsfreak6 on May 21, 2010 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, because they play in shoes.

Remember Dwight was 6’9’’ w/o shoes.

by Jordan Sams on May 21, 2010 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I’m 5’9’’ w/o shoes, 5’10.5’’ w/ shoes, and tell everyone I’m 5’10’’/5’11’’.

by Jordan Sams on May 21, 2010 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions

I wonder how Aminu measures out………….But a 7’7 wingspan is insane.

by bdownbear on May 21, 2010 11:32 AM PDT reply actions

Cousins 16.4% body fat + bad interviews isn’t good for his stock.

by Jordan Sams on May 21, 2010 11:44 AM PDT reply actions

His 9’5" Standing reach and other people reporting decent interviews are probably good for his stock.

His standing reach is the same as Shaq and Thabeet. I think he did ok.

Nick Collison: 17% Body Fat
Chris Kaman: 16.4% Body Fat

Not saying it’s not an issue, but I doubt it’s a dealbreaker

by Ebomb on May 21, 2010 12:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Favors measurements are nasty. 6.5% body fat, 7’4’’ wingspan.

by Jordan Sams on May 21, 2010 11:45 AM PDT reply actions

Wes Johnson 7’1’’ wingspan and 4.6 body fat. Wow.

by Jordan Sams on May 21, 2010 11:46 AM PDT reply actions

Turner definitely disappointing … 6’7’’ wingspan and 8.6% body fat.

by Jordan Sams on May 21, 2010 11:47 AM PDT reply actions

I wouldn't get too tied up in all the measurables.

At some point you have to watch tape and realize good basketball players are good basketball players. Turner is the pick at #2 unless something is waaaaay out of whack. So far, these are only minor measurement shifts. Potential and upside are nice, but sometimes you pick Darko Milicic instead of Carmelo Anthony. Or Greg Oden instead of Kevin Durant. After Turner I don’t think anyone in this draft is a sure thing. Favors, Cousins and Johnson should all be excellent, but no measurables are gonna swing my vote away from Wall/Turner. Maybe if Turner had like 25% body fat or something.

by NOLACuse on May 21, 2010 12:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, it’s not going to swing my vote. I was already about 55-45 on Turner/Favors however.

by Jordan Sams on May 21, 2010 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I wanna see Turner’s vertical and agility drills.

by Jordan Sams on May 21, 2010 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

The comparasins with Brandon Roy continue.

Evan Turner W.O.S 6’ 5.75" W.S 6’ 7" W.S 6’ 8" S.R 8’ 7.5" Vert NA

Brandon Roy W.O.S 6’ 5.25" W.S 6’ 6.25" W.S 6’ 8" S-R 8’ 5" Vert 34.0

Thaddeus Young W.O.S 6’ 5.75" W.S 6’ 7.5" W-S 6’ 11.5" S-R 8’ 10" Vert 34.5

Andre Iguodala – W.O.S 6’ 5.75" W.S 6’ 6.75" W-S 6’ 11" S-S 8’ 9.5" Vert 30.5

Avery Bradley with 4% body fat. That’s chiseled.

by Jordan Sams on May 21, 2010 11:49 AM PDT reply actions

Cousins on his demeanor

which would you want, an angry big man or a smiling big man?

by Derek Bodner on May 21, 2010 11:58 AM PDT reply actions

I agree with this

But also saw the interview with Andy Katz where he said he’s trying to dispel the notion that he was a “murderer.” Clearly he is not comfortable with a microphone, but neither was Tyreke Evans and he’s turned out well.

by Ebomb on May 21, 2010 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I would put a different spin on the body fat measurements.

For instance, Lance Stephenson looked like he was playing too heavy at Cincy and he came in to the combine looking like he had lost some fat (which was good for his ball and showed some effort), but the fact that his body fat measurement is still on the high side is something I’d look on as a plus because it means he has still more room for improvement in that area.

On the other hand, let’s pretend for argument’s sake that we had tested Wes Johnson’s strength and wanted him to improve – the fact that he is so lean suggests it would take him longer to do that.

I’m trying to say that the extra info you get from body fat is a lot different than how you would interpret it if you didn’t know other more directly relevant things about the player.

by izimbra on May 21, 2010 11:59 AM PDT reply actions

Wall was sitting next to Jonathan and I for a good hour. Must have given 8 different interviews, all of which voluntary. He’s very comfortable with this. Complete contrast with Cousins, who shows complete disdain.

by Derek Bodner on May 21, 2010 11:59 AM PDT reply actions

MIght that have something to do with that fact that for Wall this is just part of the coronation process whereas this same media has been bad outhing cousins for the past few months?

If I were cousins and the same guys who had been writing about me (without talking to me first) the past few months were now interviewing me – i’d enter into it with some trepidation and possible disdain.

The media is mostly evil

by jemagee on May 21, 2010 12:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Probably has more to do with the fact that Wall has been in the media spotlight. Wall went through his periods where people questioned his maturity as well. Difference is, he knows how to handle it. What Cousins is doing is simply counterproductive, regardless of its relevance.

Bledsoe on returning to school

He thought about returning to prove his ability to run the point, but the fact that this is a weak point guard draft weighed heavily on his decision.

(not that he would have, with Brandon Knight signing with Kentucky)

Turner with 34.5 inch no-step vertical. Wall with only 30 inch. Kinda surprising.
