Sixers to hire Doug Collins
Update #2: Kate Fagan has the breakdown of Collins' assistants ...
Various NBA sources indicated that Collins could potentially fill out three spots on his staff with Michael Curry (who Collins coached while with Detroit), Brian James (who was on Collins' staffs in Detroit and Washington) and Aaron McKie (who has been on staff with the Sixers under Maurice Cheeks, Tony DiLeo, and Eddie Jordan).
Update: ESPN now has the scoop, and reports the length of the deal is four years ...
The Philadelphia 76ers agreed on a four-year deal with TV analyst Doug Collins to become their new coach, a source told ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan on Thursday.
Kate Fagan via Twitter ...
76ers have agreed to terms w/ Doug Collins, NBA source confirms. Announcement tomorrow; Collins likely introduced on Monday.
No surprise here. I think Doug will be a solid coach, and he's walking into a nice situation. Last year the team won 27 games and everyone despised Eddie Jordan, so Collins will look like a savior if the Sixers win 37+ games and play defense again. People tend to forget the Sixers are a year removed from making the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, and made up for the loss of Andre Miller with Jrue Holiday, and hopefully Evan Turner
Just for kicks, here's my case against Doug Collins. I was hoping for a coach with more upside, but Collins is an okay hire, considering the Sixers were set on bringing in an experienced guy.

You should put up the updated Sixerville/Deep Sixer links as well.

Michael Curry and Brian James are going to be part of the staff and I read on philly.com that McKie will be elevated. Does anybody know about Brian James?
Yes
regarding Mckie. He’s done so much for this organization and is always kept around as an assistant, so maybe one day he will be given the reigns.

Man Eddie Jordan really f’d this team up. It seems like all I am hearing right now is why would Collins want to take this job.
SAS always has stupid articles, don’t mind it. Notice how he mentions nothing about Thad, Speights, or Jrue.
Its not just him and it seems like the only thing he knows how to do is criticize the 76ers even when somehting good happens like getting the #2 pick(Evan Turner)
Skip Bayless, Tony K … they all said the same thing. It’s alright. Everyone will think Collins is a savior when they win 37-40 games, when in reality, it won’t be much of a surprise.
I’m not sure how many games we will win next year, we did finish .500 two years ago with Tony Dileo as coach so it wouldn’t surprise me if we finished .500 or better this coming year if we get back to defense and getting out on the break and hopefully we will be better in the half court this year with the addition of Turner and Brand another year removed from those injuries.
A coach who understands the game, and can teach offense and defense is exactly what this team needs. With Collins they should get more out of their potential, which should probably be enough to get them back into the playoffs- a good situation for Doug, and a very needed change for the Sixers.
The roster needs some changing too, and with the 2nd pick they may have the chance to make some real changes. It will be good for Collins and Stefanski to have some kind of relationship where they both see the team the same way and work together to make continual improvements through trades and internal development. Considering Stefanski hired him, it makes sense that he would want to give Doug the players to be successful.
The Sixers still lack an inside presence, we still need one or two who can defend, rebound, block shots and score. They also need a decent outside shooter. With a better inside player, Kapono becomes an asset rather than a liability.
Our two best players are Iguodala and Brand, neither one of them is a #1 option on a team. That has to change.
Kapono will always be a liability. Name a team other than the Lakers with two bigs who can “defend, rebound, block shots and score.” Let’s be realistic here Ricko.
That being said, I’m happy you’re big. We missed you champ.

The other team is Boston. You know, the two teams that are going to meet in the finals. Note that the Lakers have Fisher and Artest and Kobe and some role players to shoot three’s and Boston has Ray Allen and Paul Pierce.
When you have inside players that demand a double team, someone like Kapono is given room to operate. With a team like the Sixers that has no post presence, there’s no need to double team anybody or leave anyone open. I was against the Kapono trade, but if he can shoot well enough to stretch a defense he can help our half-court offense.
Lots of NBA Championship teams had slow white guys who could come in and shoot threes!
Who are the two bigs on boston that can do those things?

Sheed doesn’t play D, rebound or block shots. Or score anymore, for that matter.

Possible Trade
On a site similar to this one (but for Hornets fans) a guy blogged about a possibility of the sixers trading #2 if the team takes on Elton Brands awful contract. The article reads:
“Chad Ford is reporting over at ESPN.com that the Sixers are shopping the 2nd pick of the draft. The cost? Elton Brand. They clearly want to clear their books of some of their more crippling contracts.
West(Expiring) + Posey(2 years) + Stojakovic(Expiring) trade for Igoudala + Brand + the 2nd pick? (The salary cap implications hurt)"
here is the link to the article: http://www.hornets247.com/blog/2010/05/21/a-quick-bit-of-trade-speculation#comments
I can’t imagine the sixers doing this… can you?
from what i have read seems like collins wants to keep brand
