Arnovitz is a Clippers fan, and wrote this article with them in mind. However; some of the candidates could be good fits for the Sixers. I'm doing some research on potential replacements for EJ, and this should be useful.

good list, no doubt – I know Ettore Messina very well, as I think to know well european basketball and I consider him one of the best coaches in the basketball world (including nba), I would love to see him as a coach of my favourite team, but my impression is that the sixers are not “ready” for Messina. I mean Messina would need some players to implement his system that the sixers cannot guarantee/afford now (not being able to really reshuffle the roster). In the “right” team Messina will be a future very successful nba coach. I’m intrigued by Joerger, though I do not know him very well.

I don’t want any coach who is so doggedly tied to a system he can’t adjust to the players available to him and their strengths and weakeness – that’s what the sixers just had – i despise system coaches – because without their system they aren’t as good

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I probably did not expressed my thoughts well: I despise system coaches too, Messina cannot be really linked to any system, but he wants his teams/players to play smart and implementa high IQ bb, for doing that he’s better helped by flexible, multidimensional big men and good and clever shooters, basically what the sixers lack the most. Apart from Holiday (maybe too young) and Brand (maybe too old) I do not see too may high IQ players among the sixers’ roster. Hope to have better explained my position.

by apfan on Apr 15, 2010 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Iguodala has a good bball IQ as well – i think the rest of the roster is questionable or non existent.

If he requires ALL high bbal IQ players, he’ll never coach in the NBA

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

yes I agree with you Igoudala has high bb iq too, although he needs more external guidance (i.e. good coach, good point guard) than others to play at his best.
Messina does not obviously need all clever bb players, but 5 or 6 would help, and again I agree with you in the nba it is not easy to find a team with that amount of high bb iq players, that’s probably why is not coaching in the league yet.

by apfan on Apr 15, 2010 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Off of that list I like Casey and Turner the best.

by The Legend on Apr 15, 2010 3:27 PM PDT reply actions

I believe Casey was a cnadidate last year as well wasn’t he?

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 3:33 PM PDT reply actions

I liked Casey, was a major candidate last year(should’ve gotten it over Jordan). I also like Turner.

Between them & Laimbeer(plus Thibodeau), those are my off-the-cuff candidates

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I have no interest in lambieer or thibodeau

No offense to the WNBA but doesn’t Bill Lambeer have the same amount of nba coaching experience as marc jackson?

I’m still troubled by thibodeau and his whole ’ i was a great coaching candidate the past two off seasons but still noe one hired me’ thing – though maybe he knew doc might be leaving after the season and really liked the idea of coaching a broken down KG, PP, and Rashweed with only rondo and perkins being any good

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

do you have any inside on Joerger?

by apfan on Apr 15, 2010 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I have no insight on anyone other than what i read – but any guy who can get a team up and well coached for the summer league is a guy you want to talk to

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Yags used to coach the Dakota Wizards

Really smart guy, great at in-game adapting, everybody loves him.
I might write about him now that he seems to be getting looks – for a bit about him, check here.

I blog at Ridiculous Upside. I know you'll love it.

by Scott Schroeder on Apr 15, 2010 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I remember you linking to the same thing a while ago and I kept him in mind. He and Elston Turner are the two names that interest me the most right now.

by yosoysean on Apr 16, 2010 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Laimbeer was an asst this year with the T-Wolves, so he does have more NBA coaching experience then Mark “There goes that man” Jackson. Though, his WNBA experience should not be overlooked. He was a very good coach there, won multiple championships. So that experience should be counted in his favor, imo

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s the WNBA – and as much as they want the commercials to convince me otherwise ’basketball is not basketball. The WNBA is not the NBA is not the NCAA

for the same reasons guys who are very successful fail in college fail in the NBA – i don’t see WNBA success translating to NBA success – seriously – if his name wasn’t Bil Lambeer – or if he was a vagina – would anyone say his WNBA success would translate over?

My yearly salary is 70 grand – i probably make more than half the women in the WNBA – it’s not the same folks

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

At this point, I was referring to X & Os and success implementing the game plan. I would say that the WNBA is much closer to the NBA than College is. One of the major reasons College Coaches fail in the NBA is because they don’t have the complete control over their environments that they are used to.

WNBA coaches are more similar to their NBA coaches in that regard, with having to more adaptable and flexible to various circumstances beyond just injury concerns. Laimbeer already has experience with that. He’s a proven champion in the NBA and as a coach with a strong enough personality to bring a team like the Sixers under heel.

Also, the reason a woman coach would struggle moreso that Laimbeer or Cooper is that her male players might not respect her due to gender, that’s the real barrier, not game knowledge.

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes...

Stefanski loved him according to Adrian Wojnarowski but if we want him we will have to get him fast since he is on top of the Clippers list too.

I’m a massive JVG fan, above anyone else.

But any defensive-first coach I’d be okay with.

by Jordan Sams on Apr 15, 2010 3:52 PM PDT reply actions

defensive first and with the right attitude in trying to get the best out of each player

by apfan on Apr 15, 2010 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Still the wrong way to go about it.

You don’t hire a defeense first coach or an offense coach first – you hire a COACH – when did coaches become so fracking specialized – a good coach maximizes the talent he has on the roster on both ends of the court…that’s what a real coach does

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions

And I think JVG’s simple P&R (according to KA) fits the Sixers well. Jrue and Speights (or Favors if we get lucky) could develop a sick P&R to run the offense through.

by Jordan Sams on Apr 15, 2010 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

But any defensive-first coach I’d be okay with.

Jrue and Speights ould develop a sick P&R

Do you see how those two sentences just don’t go together?

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Just cause you’re a defensive-first coach doesn’t mean you have no offense.

by Jordan Sams on Apr 15, 2010 4:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Defensive first coaches don’t tend to play guys who play defense like they have no arms or legs

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Speights needs a strong disciplinarian sort, who makes it clear what is expected and what won’t be tolerated. He could be salvageable.

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions

He had billy donovan, mo cheeks, tony dielo and this years coaching staff plus his own dedication and desire to become a better basketlball player on both ends of the floor.

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Toss out this years, because that was a total trainwreck as far as player development especially. His rookie year in the league was spent with two different coaches.

Yes, he does lack some initiative, but I still am not willing to write him off just yet. A strong teacher/motivator who will define what is needed from him in detail could do wonders.

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Toss out this years, because that was a total trainwreck as far as player development especially. His rookie year in the league was spent with two different coaches.

No, I don’t think I will. The problem with speights is his own work ethic and dedication (verified by two guys who work at IMG and the sixers own GM), it has nothing to do with the coach or coaches – it has to do with him working in the off season to work on his deficience – it’s not the coaches job to teach a 6’10 guy how to box out or play defense – he had the off season to do that

And oh yeah – it ain’t the coaches fault he got fat when he ws injured – that’s a lack of respect of the job you have and keeping in shape even when injured

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I am not saying Speights is blameless. I am saying that there is still a chance that a strong capable coaching staff plus a Vet or 2 can get through to him. There are players that had poor work ethics and have gotten better before. Its not impossible.

Speights has too much raw talent to dismiss so quickly.

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 4:55 PM PDT up reply actions

When the GM dismisses him – and two guys at a place he WENT TO TRAIN – well a pattern forms.

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 5:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Pattern yes, I agree. I’m not selling him right now. I’d give it one more go.

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 6:11 PM PDT up reply actions

That line of thinking is why I also really like Turner(Adelman’s deputy). Adelman’s teams were always balanced on both ends(even Sac had a high def efficiency), and Turner gets a good bit of credit for that.

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Adelman was the guy who popped into my mind but i wasn’t sure how different the sacto and houston rosters were

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, you are talking about one offensive team built around finesse bigs like Webber and Divac as primary playmakers and team defense, while Houston was defense-first with an offense centered on a traditional low-post center and an athletic swing.

Stylistically, very distinct and dramatically different. JVG said Adelman did a much better job than he would have, given the same group

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

My head might explode if I see or hear Mark Jackson’s name come up again!!!!!!!!!! I have nothing against the guy but I don’t see why a lot of people want him.

by The Legend on Apr 15, 2010 4:13 PM PDT reply actions

You know – all these rcycled names – what about the Tsar?

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:17 PM PDT reply actions

Wow, talk about the way back machine.

I think I’d take Collins over him.

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions

What do you guys think about EJs comments last night...

That this season’s roster was worst than last seasons. I disagree I think if we had a better coach we could of been a playoff team.

by The Legend on Apr 15, 2010 4:21 PM PDT reply actions

I think eddie Jordan would say anything (and has) to deflect blame from the fact that he’s a worse basketball coach then i would be

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

i think you’re both right. i think the roster is worse, but i also think we’d be a playoff team with a different coach.

by Jordan Sams on Apr 15, 2010 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

It ain’t much worse – or andre miller and reggie evans are both superstars and no one told me

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions

veterans go a long way. theo, donyell, miller, evans.

by Jordan Sams on Apr 15, 2010 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Theo Donyell and miller had talent

evans was useless in all aspects of basketball unless package grabbing is about to become a leagle defensive technique

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

donyell single-handedly won 3-4 games for us.

by Jordan Sams on Apr 15, 2010 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

and miller’s a lot better than people give him credit for.

not that i necessarily agree with it, but he made pelton’s 2nd team all defense. and he was a great point guard for us.

by Jordan Sams on Apr 15, 2010 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

He’s a good team defender, but defense at the point was not a problem once Jrue took over.

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

i still think jrue has some issues off the ball, or did in the second half of the season.

by Jordan Sams on Apr 15, 2010 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

You realize of course that YOU’RE older than Jrue Holiday

Don’t you think you have some issues that could use improvement on before you’re ready to do your chosen profession full time?

He’s better at his chosen profession than you are at yours – and he’s 2 years younger than you

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions

but we’re talking who’s better right now. you think the blazers are as good as they are now if they swapped miller and jrue?

by Jordan Sams on Apr 15, 2010 4:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup

Cause the blazers are more talented than the sixers at pretty much every damn position

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:48 PM PDT up reply actions

i disagree, but we’ll never know because it’s a hypothetical.

by Jordan Sams on Apr 15, 2010 4:51 PM PDT up reply actions

And I’m pretty sure you’re not so stupid as to think that if Andre MIller were on this roster the sixers would be anything more than an 8 seed as his career slowly slid into bolivia

The sixers are better off without Andre Miller – it’s not a single season game.

Taking willie greens side in any argument except ‘this is how you shoot too much and avoid getting fouled’ is silly

3 point shooting alone makes me prefer Holiday to the career 25% 3 point shooter

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

of course the sixers are better off w/o miller, but we were talking if they’d be better this season.

and no, i don’t think the sixers would be any better than an 8 seed with miller, but they’d be better than they were this year.

by Jordan Sams on Apr 15, 2010 4:55 PM PDT up reply actions

How much of that could be system(i.e. rotational schematics lacking) and how much of that is Jrue? That being said, I’d rather have my guards be able to smother their men while making some mistakes off the ball than the other way around, which is Miller

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 4:58 PM PDT up reply actions

could be mostly system, but not 100% sure.

by Jordan Sams on Apr 15, 2010 5:04 PM PDT up reply actions

He is not as good as willie green wants him to be

by jemagee on Apr 15, 2010 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions

His comments mask the fact that the primary fall off was on the defensive end. Offensively, it was a wash. And of the 4 vets gone(Miller, Theo, Reggie and Marshall), only guy who was a defensive impact guy was Theo. Evans was hit or miss.

by MojoPharoah on Apr 15, 2010 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Andre Miller is so good that the trailblazers are going to win in the first round this year despite the fct that michael jackson is healthier than brandon roy
