If you guys had to choose between Derrick Favors or Demarcus Cousins which one would you want the 76ers to draft?
Cousins at this point, and I don’t think its very close. He really distanced himself from the rest of the big man pack this season. That being said, his ten cent head concerns me a decent amount, but not enough to pick Favors over him

agreed – i had higher hopes with favors this season especially going into a conference without a dominating big man with exception for trevor booker – but i’d certainly still take him if/when cousins is off the board

Cousins is the 3rd pick in the draft right now, on talent alone he could be the #2 or even #1 prospect…but he has attitude and coachability concerns that could make him slip.
If he slips, I don’t care, if he’s available when the sixers draft PICK HIM – especially after the ‘strike 3’ confirmation on speights being fat and lazy

Favors. And I say that without a whole lot of hesitation.
If Cousins reaches his maximum potential, does he have the ability to be a better player than Favors? Absolutely. But I’m much more comfortable with the entire package of Favors.
Everyone I’ve talked to says Favors mental makeup and work ethic is outstanding.

Cousins is the most dominant college big man in a long, long time. I don’t think you can pass that up based on the makeup of a 19 year old kid.
That being said, I do like Favors and think he’ll turn into a decent pro. But Cousins is worlds better than him talent-wise at this point.

I think you’re overstating that a little bit. Most dominant college freshman big man, maybe (although Michael Beasley, if you consider him a big man, has something to say about that). He’s been incredible since he’s had his minutes bumped up.
He’s definitely worlds better than Favors at one end of the floor, at least. He’s not the world’s best defender, and it has to do with physical limitations as well as inconsistent effort. His lateral footspeed is going to be more of an issue at the next level, especially with the lack of a zone and the high use of pick and roll in the NBA vs the college game.
I see a whole lot of potential in Favors to improve offensively, and some of that is just putting him in a better situation. Paying with Lawal and those guards have really hurt his stats, IMO.
This is going to be one of those interesting comparisons to look back on in 4 years. I’ll readily admit that Cousins has the significantly better offensive potential. That’s not the entire part of the player, either skillwise or mindset, that I look at, though.
Frankly, I’d LOVE to draft Cousins, and if we had the 5th pick and got that talent I’d be excited. But I’d be significantly concerned, as well.

I agree
The things listed as “weaknesses” on Cousins’ page on draftexpress.com scare the hell out of me. “Activity level”, “Commitment to playing defense”, “Body language”, “Doesn’t always play hard”, “Focus”, “High bust potential?”, “Maturity”, “Mental toughness”, “Off-court red flags?”, “Questionable intangibles”
Favors’ weaknesses mostly seem to be able to be fixed by teaching/experience.
Cousins upsides are that he’s probably the first or second most talented player in the league.
I love when people criticize 19 year for, you know, being 19 years old.
How many of you were ‘coachable’ at 19?
by jemagee on Mar 10, 2010 6:38 AM PST up reply actions
I think Cousins will put up big number ala Zach Randolph, but I don’t think he’s someone you build a champion around.
i was – but my basketball talent peaks as starter for a small high school that couldn’t even reach .500

So should we throw out all personality red flags ?
can we wait for a player to hit 25 or 26 to mature? He’ll be in the league 5-6 years by then.
Even looking past the maturity red flags (of which there are plenty), if Cousins turns out to be neither a great defender or passer, how high is his upside really ?

That’s not what I said at all
but neither you nor I nor anyone here has the opporutnity to interview the kid and talk to him for 2 to 3 hours to see what he’s really like – what we get are second hand reports many from ‘sources’ that have no names.
This isn’t like Thorpe and then the other guy at IMG and then the freaking GM saying Speights is fat and lazy – tese are reports that are ‘unattributed’ mostly…he has more upside than favors – if he’s willing to work at it – and no one – not even you unless you get 3 hours with him – knows what he’s really willing to do
by jemagee on Mar 10, 2010 10:21 AM PST up reply actions
Well, then I will let you know June 23rd when I do get to interview him.
(I also disagree about your statement about the validity of the sources and being able to trust the people saying it, but we’re unlikely to change each others minds on that).

If the Kentucky Coach, or assistant coach, or his high school coach said something i’d lend more credence to it than outside observers.
Again, he’s 19, i don’t know anyone who was a finished product when they were 19, no one is really fully grown up, but i wouldn’t draft him either without having that 2-3 hour talk with him – as a GM – no offense – but even if you get to interview him – your imprssions of him don’t matter to me as much as Tony DiLeo’s…and that’s not you, that’s any journalist….I trust TOny DiLeo’s opinion of a player more than I trust a writers or bloggers, if DiLeo drafts him, I have faith he might know what he’s doing (less than I did when I learned about speights, but still more than the average blogger or writer).
It’s probably a moot point (but it ain’t mute) cause he’s going to be a top 5 pick most likely and the sixers aren’t getting there.
I’m hoping there’s some upside guys who for whatever reason slide unreasonably come tournament time – like syraucse wes or something.
I like the OK State guy but I think 9 is too high but moving down in the NBA draft is alwys tricky to get where you want to be and difficult to accomplish
by jemagee on Mar 10, 2010 10:51 AM PST up reply actions
Obviously, he’s 19. But even if you throw out the negative signs, he’s not exactly showing a lot of positive signs either, and that to me is an issue. Whereas I can read about Derrick Favors talking about how he overcame never knowing his dad, and I can read about John Wall losing his father, and I can listen to coaches, teammates and others talk about their work ethics, I don’t get that vibe from Cousins at all.
To me, it’s as much the lack of positive signs about his personality being displayed than it is the specific negative incidents.
Obviously, Tony’s opinion should count more than mine. There’s a reason Tony gets paid for his basketball evaluation and I make my money being a Network Administrator.
Problem is, you have to determine whether these concerns are a “phase” that he’ll grow out of or a character flaw. I don’t like playing armchair psychologists on young kids. But it’s unavoidable.
I still have small hope for a top 5 pick. I need some hope to keep me going through the rest of the season.
