More Jrue Holiday

Besides "not tanking" and the draft lottery, Jrue's development is the only item of interest for the remaining 14 games. Last week I looked at Jrue's advanced stats and put them up against his fellow rookies. Today I'm comparing them to three point guards who I've seen numerous people compare Jrue to.

And here are Jrue's advanced stats before the all-star break and his current advanced stats.

PER TS% eFG% ORB% DRB% TRB% AST% STL% BLK% TOV% USG% ORtg DRtg OWS DWS WS
Pre-ASB 10.3 .471 .439 3.7 9.4 6.6 22.3 2.3 0.9 19.7 17.8 96 109 -0.2 0.6 0.3
Post-ASB 12.0 .521 .495 3.6 9.1 6.3 22.4 2.1 1.0 20.4 18.2 100 111 0.2 0.8 1.0
Difference 1.7 .050 .056 -0.1 -0.3 -0.3 0.1 -0.2 0.1 -0.7 0.4 4 -2 0.4 0.2 0.7

It's impressive how much Jrue's overall stats have improved since the break considering there's only been 16 games, as opposed to 43 prior to the break.

-------------------------

Don't read anything into the comparison to Payton, Kidd and Billups. I'm not hinting at Jrue being anything like - or as good as any of the three. By now, you know how I feel about Jrue. I just wanted to throw out some more numbers while the team has a day off. Enjoy.

Of the 3, Billups is the one I see the closest comparison to in terms of his game. If he develops a post game (which he theoretically can, because of his size), it might be eerily similar.

The age there is relevant, IMO. They all have 2-3 years on Jrue.

Definetely. I had no idea GP was 22 his rookie year.

I would not have thought Billups was the best comparison before Jrue suddenly turned into the second coming of Drazen Petrovic from deep.

Also, I hope Jrue bulks up like Billups did. He would really help add to his strengths on defense and in the lane.

I have been impressed with Jrue’s 3 point shooting. Obviously it is outstanding right now.

Jrue’s form on his jumper still concerns me a bit.

by Jordan Sams on Mar 18, 2010 4:06 PM PDT reply actions

it’s a concern, but at least he isn’t taking pull up jumpshots instead of looking to find his teammates. some PGs (rajon rondo pops into my head) don’t need to be extremely effective with a jumpshot to impact a team. he makes you stay honest though because he can hit the open jumper a majority of the time.

by packimop on Mar 19, 2010 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Like I said below, forcing defenses to go over picks to deny his jumper potentially opens up a ton of options for Jrue.

Rondo has to use his incredible quickness to get past defenders that sag off of him and go under every screen. While a guy like Nash can get penetration off of every screen because the defense always has to fight over the screen. It allows a gut without elite quickness (at age 37) to break down a defense at will.

IMO every elite NBA player has either off the charts athleticism or a deadly jumper to set up the rest of his game. So without a dangerous jumpshot Jrue cannot ever become a great player- because he is not an off the charts athlete.

By “great player” I mean the type of star that can be part of a contending nucleus. But Jrue can still be a very good NBA PG even without a great jumper- just that the jumper is the key to any chance he has to become a top 40 NBA player.

Look at the production this month over last.

Feb
27.5 MPG .
8.1PPG
3.1 APG
2.0 RPG
0.9SPG
.456 FG%.
.333 (7-21) 3P%
.909 (10-11) FT%

March
33.6MPG
14.4 PPG
5.3 APG
3.9 RPG
1.5 SPG
.523(56-107) FG%
.556 (20-36) 3P%
.800 (12-15) FT%

So in basically 6 more minutes per game he has improved his shooting, scoring and has more assists. Also in Feb we played 11 games, so far in March 10 games. He has developed well, and this year it really is not just numbers going up for a player because of more minutes (is from Nov/Dec but has improved)

Jrue has finally gotten the green light to try and initiate things on the floor. previously he was sent out there to be more of an observer.

This is why I thought the comparisons to Evans and Curry’s great production were premature. I remember watching the Sixers/Warriors game thinking that Jrue looked just as good, but was playing a restrained game… while Curry was taking 24 shots and trying to score and create every time he had the ball.

I’m still a big fan of Curry and Evans. Its more that they were just given a chance to try and shine earlier in the year. Now that Jrue has gotten a green light for a loser (like Curry and Evans have enjoyed all year) he is putting up great numbers.

I will be interested in seeing to what degree Jrue’s jumper is sustainable. Obviously he is hot, confident and under little pressure right now. how do you think he does next season in terms of FG and 3pt%?

I think there’s no question that both will drop. The real question is, how far? I could see him rounding out at a 45-35 guy – which isn’t bad at all. I’d like to see him get to the line more.

Here’s another comparison I’ve heard – again three years age difference.

by Jordan Sams on Mar 18, 2010 8:41 PM PDT up reply actions

I think if anything, his percentage from the field will go up. He can be better than 43%. But yeah, if he can sit around 35 or so from deep I’d be copacetic.

by Michael Levin on Mar 18, 2010 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorry, I meant down from his recent percentages – like 50 something percent after the break.

I see Wade as a rookie as closer to Russell Westbrook. Both are freak athletes and about the same size.

Wade remained a scorer while Westbrook changed his game a bit to be a PG- although I think his assist numbers are inflated by having Durant as a teammate.

Jrue lacks that freak level of athleticism and explosiveness. He also does not share that reckless abandon type style when he drives. Which is fine, since Jrue has the right style for a more classic PG. Sustaining that jumper is the key. If defenses have to “go over the pick” against him he will always be able to get into the lane and do damage. He can become Andre Miller with defense and a jumpshot- which is a very good thing.

lol comparing him to d-wade is a joke. flash is just in a completely different stratosphere athletically than jrue, and pretty much everyone else in the league besides lebron.

by packimop on Mar 19, 2010 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Well due to his injury issues and beating he takes I think Wade is in a different stratosphere than everyone – and not the same one as lebron as i feel one is over rated and one isn’t.

by jemagee on Mar 19, 2010 8:40 AM PDT up reply actions

please don’t tell me you lebron is overrated. no one is saying he’s the GOAT or anything. there’s no doubt he’s the best player in the NBA today.

by packimop on Mar 20, 2010 9:44 AM PDT up reply actions

John’s feelings for the overratedness of Dwyane Wade are well documented here. He was not talking about Bron.

i just wrote a lot

but i lost it all. so ill just say im drinking the raspberry ice tea regarding our boy’s potential. and the sun rises in the east for Jrue the Damaja
