Mr 4th Quarter: Lou Williams?
Lou Williams "clutch" (4th quarter or overtime, less than 5 minutes left, neither team ahead by more than 5 points) stats this season:
Points per 48 minutes: 40.1
Field Goal Percentage: 56%
Percent of makes assisted: 42%
Percent of shots which are jumpers: 76%
Effective Field Goal Percentage on jumpers: 52%
Percentage of time he draws fouls: 15%
Free throw percentage: 77%
Assists per 48 minutes: 0.8
-------------------------
Small-ish sample size? Yes. I just thought I'd throw them out there after his multiple 4th quarter daggers last night.
On a side note, does anyone think that a lineup of Jrue, Lou, Andre, Brand, Dalembert can be successful in the future? Jrue, Andre and Sam are all above average defenders. Brand in his older age is still a decent defender. Sam and Andre are elite rebounders for their positions.
I know that Lou is vastly undersized and an average-to-below average defender, but not every player on the floor has to be a terrific defender, especially if surrounded by good defenders, and placed in the right system. I think Lou has shown that he's a good enough scorer to earn some serious burn in the future. But you're not doing him any favors by employing a no-defense head coach and playing him with defenders and rebounders like Thad, Iverson, Speights, etc.

BTW
That lineup I mentioned has played a grand total of 1.23 minute this year. Talk about a small sample size!
Offensive rating: 133
Defensive rating: 67
on pace to be undefeated with that lineup

Yeah, sorry. BasketballValue.com wasn’t updated yet.
That unit has now played 14 minutes.
120 offensive rating
73 defensive rating
Depends on the coach, and how you’re going to use Lou. Jrue is capable of defending twos, so you technically could switch Jrue onto the opposing team’s shooting guard, but I don’t think you’d want to. You want to keep your best defender on the ball. This means Lou is going to have to deal with a size mismatch. With AI9 and Jrue on the floor, though, you have the option of putting Lou on the third-worst perimeter player, regardless of position (PG, SG or SF).
Personally, I think Lou’s much better suited to an offense off the bench role, and I’d rather have a shooting guard between Jrue and Iguodala who can really stretch the floor (and at least not have a size disadvantage), but with the current roster you can pretty much flip a coin between Willie and Lou.
Send GT Green packing.
I’m not arguing that. I don’t think either is an ideal fit starting at SG w/ that unit, though. Lou doesn’t shoot well enough, he’s a defensive liability but he can score. Willie shoots a little bet on jumpers, is less of a defensive liability and he doesn’t dominate the ball, meaning you can have the ball in the hands of the real playmakers (Jrue and Iguodala) more.
There are sacrifices either way, I’d probably go with Willie, but that’s just because I always choose defense first, and Willie is a better defender than Lou, which isn’t saying a whole lot.

I think Lou and Willie are about equal on jumpers this year, and I know it’s flawed but Lou has a better defensive rating and opponent PER + Points per 48 than Green.
I hate defending Willie, but look at it this way, when they pick matchups, Lou always gets the easier assignment. Without fail. Willie, Jrue or Iguodala get the tough cover every time. And Lou’s opponent number is 0.1 better than Willie’s.

Fair enough, but I don’t see the point of playing Green more than Williams on a lottery team. Williams has more room to grow and he’s better offensively.
If we’re talking about what they should do, then yeah you definitely play Lou. If you’re talking about winning games, or the best possible lineup, I think it’s debatable, at least.

But assuming they upgrade at SG (which we have been waiting for a long time) then it makes most sense to use Lou as a 6th man. It is only their current weakness at SG that makes Lou a viable option as starter.

Yeah, odds are Lou could handle at least one of them. Like when they played the Lakers Jrue guarded Kobe and Iguodala guarded Artest. I think Lou could handle D-Fish.
Well, maybe not handle, but Fisher isn’t going to kill you. And if the Lakers start running a ton of plays for Fisher, you’ve kind of won the battle already, right?

What about the Celtics? You think if Lou had a coach and his teammates telling him “Don’t leave Ray under any circumstance” he’d be able to stick with Ray Allen assuming Jrue took Rondo and Iguodala took Pierce?
No, he’s isn’t tough enough, nor motivated enough to fight through the screens they run Allen off.

Lou’s defense has improved a lot since the beginning of the year. there is still room for improvement, but he has definitely stepped it up. He is also only 23 year’s old. He’s just going to get better. Willie green is no where near Lou offensively. Lou can check rondo or allen.
I think we have different definitions of check.

Check to see if they’re still on the court, perhaps?

I voted Allen Iverson Lite, but mostly because I’ve been referring to him as that for a couple eyars now.
