Breakout Player: Lou Williams
Lou Williams is quietly having his breakout season at 23 years old. Unfortunately it's going unnoticed because the Sixers are terrible, Lou Williams is old news, everyone's goo-goo for Jrue-Jrue, and Eddie Jordan has caused more controversy than the Snooki-punch.
No, Lou Williams isn't the greatest defender, and he's not a true point guard. He's a combo-guard who can score in bunches and occasionally take over a game.
To put his breakout season in perspective I ran a player comparison (my new favorite thing to do) on Basketball Reference comparing Lou to players with similar styles -- all of whom are widely considered good players. I chose one veteran (Barbosa), one rookie (Curry) and one young veteran (Brooks) to get a variety.
Tale of the tape:
Aaron Brooks, 6', 165 lbs, 25 years old
Leandro Barbosa, 6'3'', 176 lbs, 24 years old
(Barbosa is 27, but I used his 2006-2007 season to compare because it was by far his best year, and he was around the same age of the other guys.)
Stephen Curry, 6'3'', 185 lbs, 21 years old
Louis Williams, 6'2'', 175 lbs, 23 years old

Hey look at our site putting advanced stats in featured posts. It’s like we’re graduating middle school! Does that mean I have to try harder now?? Setting the bar a bit high Jordan.

Lou williams is a defensive sieve

Appreciating Lou
This was good to see. I was down on Lou because of his defensive shortcomings. His shot is better; his decisions are better and if he would just put more into his defense and control dribble penetration…
Should he play – start – alongside Jrue?
Congratulations
In one week you’ve written a premature farewell letter to Andre Iguodala in which you essentially say, “You’re pretty good, but you can’t score, so I’m glad you’re gone,” and now you’ve followed it up with a love letter to Lou Williams which basically says, “You can score, so I don’t even care that you can’t do anything else.”
You’ve officially become everything I hate about average fans.
Send GT Green packing.
Jesus I’ve gotten bitter.
Anyway, you get my point but I could’ve made it without being a dick, so I apologize.
Send GT Green packing.

maybe like me he just spent 2.5 hours in best buy upgrading from vista to windows 7 – that just sucked

The difference is, I’m comparing Lou to Leandro Barbosa — not a top 15 player. Lou does exactly what he’s gets paid for. If he was an elite defender and a great point guard he wouldn’t be signed to a 5 year, 25 million dollar deal.
He has a job, and it’s to score. He’s the best pure scorer on this team. He’s not a defensive stopper and he’s not a point guard. Don’t expect him to be.
Don’t expect him to be.
Don’t tell me, tell the sixers
Who so far this year have thought that both louis williams and willie green are starters
In fact, if not for the Iverson debacle and Stefanski bitch slapping jordan on local radio – i expect the starting back court would still contain one of (if not both) Lou williams and willie green
Two guys who basically do the same freaking thing
(Which is also something ignored – lou makes willie redundant and or vice versa, all they do is score points off the bench – 2 guys, over 10% of your allowable signed contracts who do the exact fracking thing)

I guess, but when they’re both on the roster, obth being paid to do one thing and one thing only – who really gives a crap whose ‘better’ – they’re both taking up space

I get what you’re saying, but just because Willie Green is on the roster doesn’t mean you discount Lou Williams.
He’s a good enough scorer to fit somewhere on a contender one day.

And on the sixers he’s an uneeded extra piece that takes up salary space.
This team isn’t contending any time soon (contrary to the piston plan, and by the way, the piston plan is not just ‘no stars’, it’s ‘defense first’, so Lou Williams doesn’t fit in the piston plan, neither does willie green, allen iverson, thaddeus young, mareese speights, jason smith, or jason kapono, but aside from that it’s a good plan), and they want to avoid the luxury tax, which is why I think Lou Williams is the most likely to be ‘given away’ this off season for nothing
