Iguodala probably isn't going to Dallas
The Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks are closing in on a multi-player trade that will launch Washington's long-anticipated rebuilding project in earnest and send Wizards mainstays Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood to the Mavericks, according to sources close to the situation.

Rumors floating around with absolutely no crediblity that a cavs/sixers/suns menage is being discussed

Basically something like:
Amar’e to Cleveland
Iggy To PHX.
Hickson, expirings to Philly
Lots of other names thrown out there (Sam, green, Kapono, JRich… to make the deal work.)
-Overall a garbage deal for the Sixers. Trade away your best young player to avoid the tax… but still end up near the cap.

IMO this team really only needs to have 2 things happen to rebuild:
1. have Brand off the books before the new CBA (Summer ’11)
2. Get top 5 picks the next 2 years (hopefully one good and one great player.)
That would leave the team in a good financial footing (Brand, Sam, Green, Kapono off the books). They would also have good young talent: Iguodala/Speights/Thad/Holiday/Lou/two top 5 picks.
…getti9ng rid of EJ goes without question.

I don’t think it’s possible for Brand to get off the books before next summer without trading Iguodala (or one of other young guys) with him. But I agree in principle with your idea. Rebuilding is a good time.

I agree. To take it one step further, it’s impossible to get back-to-back top 5 picks without getting rid of Iguodala and/or Brand. Any trade of Iguodala looks terrible in principal, but you have to look at the big picture.
In this case we’d get expiring and a young asset — I’d do it. Hickson is probably better than Speights at this point.

Caron Butler Haywood for Howard
Basketball wise – isn’t sam and andre a better duo?

Of course not. Butler can flat out score, duh.

You would think so, but no. I argued that with some Wizards guys and then looked at the numbers and Iguodala/Butler is pretty close — I’d rather have Iguodala, but Haywood is actually really underrated.
If nothing else it’s a lot closer than you think. And a lot of teams would probably have Butler + his contract than Iguodala + his contract.
I was ignoring contract (because it’s the mavs) – Sam’s probably under rated these days and the ‘numbers’ aside from points – where is Butler better than Iguodala? ANd let’s not for get defense.
What I think is that the sixers offer a better package of talent in Iguodala/Dalembert but really did want more than just expirings (Howard/Dampier)

Butler’s not better than Iguodala, but he’s not much worse either. And I made a mistake — Haywood is having a much better year than Brand not Sam. Sam is actually our second best player.
So yes, Iguodala and Sam are better talent-wise, but it’s so slight that the contracts were probably the deal-breaker.
And who knows, maybe the Sixers were asking for picks as well.

Mavs have no picks really worth offering, or talent (aside from beaubois who they seem unwilling to give up)_
So all they really have to offer is expirings, and I don’t think with Cuban contracts are an issue (just my own feeling) if he thinks he can win.
So my educated guess is that the mavs/sixers deal didn’t happen because as of now the sixers are still standing firm about more than just expirings for Iguodala…we’ll see if that lasts

I realize that first round picks have their downside, but they can be very beneficial. How do you think the Mavs got Roddy B?

The sixers have shown very little interest in mining non american basketball leagues for talent.
Low first round picks are less valuable than high second round picks due to the guaranteed contractness…and you can usually buy them for about 3 mil…not much of a trade incentive

I get what you’re saying, but since we can’t get early 2nd rounders I’d settle for late 1st rounders. They’re still assets. Would you rather trade Iguodala for just expirings or at least get a pick out of it?
I don’t really care either way because whatever trade they would make for Iguodala would be bad, and any money saved probably wouldn’t be spent….regardless of record, this iteration of the sixers has probably peaked as an 8 seed first round playoff loser mediocre draft pick making nonsense.
It’s going to be this way for a while unless radical moves are made…

contracts
definitely the difference. Haywood makes almost half as much as Dalembert, Butler’s cheaper than Iggy, and perhaps more significant than the total payroll being accumulated is the fact that Dalembert’s contract likely would have necessitated the inclusion of Dampier, whereas in the proposed Washington trade Dallas would keep him. In a vacuum, I’d rather have Iguodala and Dalembert, but as a trade this really looks like a bigger “win” for Dallas.
Personally, if I can make a semi-educated guess, I think the reason a 76ers-Mavs trade didn’t happen is because Dallas really only wanted Iguodala and Philly wasn’t willing to let him go without unloading someone else(Brand and/or Dalembert) or getting a premium talent back(Stoudemire, a caliber of player the Mavs simply don’t have on the trading block).

ESPN is reporting that the sixers were ‘aggressively’ shopping Iguodala over the past 10 days but are pulling him back.
If the sixers make no moves they are still over the projected luxury tax for 2011

As a Wolves fan, I would offer expirings, Charlotte’s 1st, Utah’s 1st, and Wayne Ellington for AI2 and Dalembert. What do Sixers fans think?
I don’t know how much power you have in terms of “offering” but I doubt you could give all of those up, seeing how they’re not quite related. In this fantasy world, I would do it in a second.
