Player Comparison: Andre Iguodala and Scottie Pippen

People have casually thrown out Scottie Pippen's name when comparing Andre Iguodala to former NBA players, so out of curiosity I ran a player comparison on Basketball Reference and the numbers are very similar through the first six years of their career.

Does this mean Andre Iguodala is, or will be as good as Scottie Pippen? No, but the similarities are interesting, to say the least. It makes me wonder how Iguodala would be perceived if he was paired with a superstar like LeBron James.

Looks like Scottie has the advantage in FG%, ORB’s, Assists & Steals but you almost have to give the edge to Andre for his efficiencies elsewhere.

Needless to say Scottie was paired with Michael, and Andre’s been paired with Allen and Elton on the tail end of their careers so it’s hardly an apples to apples comparison.

The Pippen Comparisons started the day Iguodala was drafted…

How good would pippen have been early in his career playing next to a ball hogging iverson and/or nobody.

Pippen was a much better defender.

He also didn’t think he was the greatest thing to walk the planet, which allowed him to flourish on a team with the GOAT. Andre tells everybody he’s a superstar, Pippen was a superstar and everybody knew it without him having to say a word.

Their defensive numbers are pretty similar, so I wouldn’t say Pippen was a much better defender.

just by the eye test, i really think pippen was a better help defender and a more versatile defender than iggy. ’91 finals, he really put a hurt on the lakers with his defense on an aging magic. i just think that pip had a better mindset and was more determined than iggy. not taking anything away from iggy.

But you think Iguodala would focus more on defense if he didn’t have to try and be superstar?

by Jordan Sams on Feb 11, 2010 2:06 PM PST up reply actions

The problem with the ‘eye test’ is that it fails at accurate impartial and factual analysis because it’s filtered by the brain and isn’t ‘fast enough’ to observe all the defense is made…

Iguodala is a great on the ball defender surrounded by subpar defensive team mates most of his career

It’s easier to ‘look better’ on defense when you’re surrounded by, you konw, defenders

by jemagee on Feb 11, 2010 2:33 PM PST up reply actions

is defense really measurable with numbers?

by apfan on Feb 12, 2010 1:09 AM PST reply actions

There are metrics out there for measuring defensive ability of players and to me it’s more reliable than ‘the eye test’ especially the eye test on televised games as opposed to the eye test from someone who has access to all game film and can watch it all with better access

It’s not perfect, but it’s the best we have.

I think defense is made out of a mental attitude together little clever moves, anticipating the player attacking and so on, not seen on tv, but live, not as an entertaiment, but as a sport.
