Advanced Stats on Turner, Favors, Cousins and Johnson

Previous updates:

November 19

Again, this a check-up on rookies the Sixers could have taken instead of Evan Turner, and a comparison to Turner using advanced statistics. We'll do this every 5 to 10 games. I also want to remind you this is still a SMALL SAMPLE SIZE!

Two things I must mention

  1. As of today Turner and Favors come off the bench for their teams, while Cousins and Johnson start.
  2. DeMarcus was thrown out of practice 10 days ago for arguing with his coach.

My ranking as of 12/09/10:

  1. Derrick Favors
  2. DeMarcus Cousins
  3. Wesley Johnson
  4. Evan Turner
Of the four, Favors is clearly playing the best basketball.

Then there's Cousins, who's playing like Marreese Speights and acting like Rasheed Wallace. The attitude problems that concerned many pre-draft appear to real, and his offensive efficiency has been abysmal. However; he is 20 years old, so early struggles were expected.

Then you have Johnson and Turner, who were supposed to be more NBA-ready than Favors and Cousins, but have struggled mightily through the first quarter of the season. To say one's played better than the other is difficult, because they've both been Willie Green-bad.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't regret taking Turner over Favors. If there were a re-draft Favors would be the pick, no question. He's almost as much of a no-brainer as selecting Evan Turner was five months ago. Oops. However; I'm in no position to bash the pick, nor is Tanner, Derek or Mike, or 80% of the LB community.

We'll check back in with the rookies in a few weeks. Hopefully Turner turns things around before then.

Can I just say I’m proud of everyone who voted for ET and hasn’t given up on him. Premature for anyone who was an ET guy to say it was the wrong pick. When AI9’s been out of the lineup ET’s looked awesome. Right now with Iguodala still around and Meeks on fire it’s hard for him to make much happen.

only reason i switched to favors is cause we traded sam. i wanted turner only because we didnt have the huge hole at center.

I voted for Cousins and I’m sticking with him. He may not ever be tamed, but I still think he has the most talent of the 4. I had Turner 4th out of 4, mainly because he was turnover prone and because he did most of his work getting to the hoop, which was much easier against weaker/smaller competition. Turnovers haven’t been as much a problem, but the lack of scoring has been exactly what I feared. I’m willing to give him time, but I didn’t think he was a great prospect before the draft, and I have no reason to think so now.

As a Wolves fan

I can’t speak about any of the other rooks, but while we’re a bit disappointed with Wes’ production offensively, we’re lovin’ the guy. He’s playing massive minutes, guarding the other teams best perimeter offensive player night in and night out (and doing a pretty decent job), and keeps giving glimpses of becoming much much more in the future. However, right now, I think his offensive production is limited most significantly by playing next to Michael Beasley. Rambis appears intent on not only figuring out what he has in Beasley, but also in giving Beasley a green light on offense all the time to help facilitate Beasley’s development. As such, Wes has been shooting less and less, appearing to focus more and more on being a solid complimentary player. When Beasley’s been out Wes has shown a lot more. It’ll be interesting to see how this develops in the future.
