Advanced Stats on Turner, Favors, Cousins and Johnson

Previous updates:

November 5

Again, this a check-up on rookies the Sixers realistically could have taken instead of Evan Turner, and a comparison to Turner using advanced statistics. We'll do this every 5 to 10 games. I also want to remind you this is a SMALL SAMPLE SIZE! Viewer discretion is advised.

Turner, Favors and Cousins all had significant drop-offs since our last update, while Wesley Johnson made positive strides. Through the first 10th of the season our guy Evan Turner has the lowest PER, TS%, and offensive rating. If it weren't his defense and defensive rebounding, he'd be significantly worse than his counterparts.

Two side notes on Turner

  1. Although Turner ranks third in total rebounding percentage, trailing Favors by 6.3%, he ranks second in defensive rebounding (24.0) trailing Cousins (25.9) by only 1.9%.
  2. In games Andre Iguodala missed with injury Turner is averaging 14 points with a TS% of .520. In games Turner and Iguodala have both played in Turner is averaging 7 points with a TS% of .446.

My ranking as of 11/19/10:

  1. Derrick Favors
  2. DeMarcus Cousins
  3. Evan Turner
  4. Wesley Johnson

Uh, that’s wrong.

Reminder on a feature I have at PhiilyArena. If you click on “”http://nba.phillyarena.com/teamstats/" target="new">Searchable Stats" on the left, you can then search for player stats which andre iguodala plays and doesn’t play.

Evan Turner is averaging 7 pts, 5.3 rebounds on 42.2% shooting when Iguodala plays.

To Iguodala or not to Iguodala...

Derek…is there any way to get a detail analysis of how much better Turner is when Iguodala is out v. when Iguodala is in? I’m not good enough with the advanced stats to work it out. But the hated “eye test” seems to indicate he’s a LOT better when Iguodala is out of the lineup.

He shoots the same FG% (42%) without Iguodala but shoots and gets to the line more often, which is why his TS% is better w/o Iguodala.

He also averages nearly 10 rebounds w/o Iguodala.

Yeah, my bad.

Instead of dividing the 56 points Turner scored by 8 (games w/ Iguodala), I divided by 12 (games total).

You coulda just done the search and saved yourself all the math…

Will do from now on. Didn’t cross my mind.

So far, the only thing that Evan Turner does better than Wes Johnson is rebound. Surprisingly, Wes has a better assist%. In TS%, Win Shares, Offensive Rating and PER, Wes Johnson is superior to Evan Turner.

I realize they are close enough where subjectively, we can all have our own opinions, just curious whey you think Turner is performing better than Johnson.

Just cause Turner’s played better those numbers w/o Iguodala. I’m not sure what Wes’s situation is, but I think Turner’s play minus Andre is better than Wes thus far.

Just out of curiousity

Would a Johnson + Filler for Iguodala deal be of any interest? I think a Johnson-Turner Wing situation would be complimentary on offense and dynamic on defense and he wouldn’t fight with Turner or Holliday for the ball. The Wolves could use a ball-handing SG to compliment Beaseley at SF. Maybe a three team deal where Flynn goes to a third team and a young big along with Johnson comes back to Philly. The Wolves could absorb Iguodala’s salary in such a deal as well without needing to send Philly back even money.

I think this will turn out to be a strong top-5. Wall is Wall, but Cousins/Favors/Turner/Wes have all shown they can play very well at this level. We couldn’t go wrong if we picked any one of them.

It just means there wasn’t a clear-cut #2. Despite all of the collegiate awards.
