Summer League 2009
The 2009 Summer League starts July 6th. The Sixers are sending half a team to Orlando. In what I see as one of the sillier cost saving moves by Comcast, the Sixers and Nets will share a team in Summer League. It's ostensibly known as the 'Nets' team. In the past the Sixers have sent a full squad to the Las Vegas Summer League, but because of the recession (I guess) they decided to go cheap and waste some great opportunities, in my opinion.
First off -- this is the Nets/Sixers. For instance, the Sixers web page has nothing splashy about the Summer League team. The Nets have a a whole section dedicated to Summer League. They have videos of practice using Adobe Flash Player. I'm on Firefox and Vista and really can't get the videos to play much, but there isn't much to see if you do get them to load.Secondly -- the head coach of the team is a Nets coach (Brian Hill), and from what I can see, he's running the practices. Summer League is a great time for the younger guys on the team to learn a new system especially if a new coach has been hired (or they've never played in the NBA). The Sixers hired new coach Eddie Jordan this off-season as we all know. Summer League would have been a nice chance for him to get to know two key pieces on the Sixers roster (Speights and Holiday) and give these young guys a head start on learning his system (and a head start for Holiday showing himself as an NBA point). I'm sure Speights and Holiday will get minutes and the invitees for the Sixers (Dionte Christmas and Blake Ahearn) may get some run, but will anyone be surprised when the Nets guys get the major minutes? Even with split minutes, how are these games anything more than 'pick up' games for the sixers guys when it's not their system?
Thirdly -- roster make up. I could be entirely wrong on this, but I'm only going on memory without researching every name on the roster. If I'm wrong, please correct me. There are 12 names on the roster, and I only recognize four names related to the Sixers: Speights, Holiday, Ahearn, Christmas. So, only one third of the roster is made up of Sixers invites. Is this another budgetary constraint (do summer league guys get paid?) or was this the Nets saying, "you only get four spots"? Whichever, it's just another indication that this is more Nets than Sixers.
Each member of the Sixers third needs to show something in the Summer League, and they may or may not get the chance to do.
- He needs to show that he can run the point. Even in this laid back environment Holiday needs to show some folks (fans) that he can run the point. I also think with the Sixers so far seeming uninterested in signing a point guard not named Andre Miller (who I don't believe will be back), this could be Holiday's chance to get a small head start on Louis Williams in the point guard competition. If Sixers coaches were there, teaching the system they plan to use in the regular season, they could see how Holiday works (or doesn't) on both ends of the court and how he adjusts to his new surroundings. They could get a real strong feel for the kind of game that Holiday is going to bring from day one.
Mareese Speights
- Speights had a solid rookie season when he was on the court. Well, he was solid offensively. Defensively he just wasn't good. He was foul prone, showed poor rebounding and overall defense, but he's young and it would seem from the little we've seen of him, he has the upside to improve that defense while continuing to strengthen his offensive game. I know defense isn't vital during the Summer League, but with a pure Sixers team they could have stressed it for guys like Speights . I doubt Speights defensive evolution matters as much to the Nets coaching staff as seeing what a guy like CDR can do. Thus, the Sixers won't get to see what work -- if any -- Speights has done in this off-season.
Blake Ahearn
- I'm handling the two invite guys differently cause I think they have slightly different needs in the Summer League. Blake Ahearn was a second round pick of the Spurs at one point. He was one of the best 3 point shooters in the NBDL last year, and as all fans know, that is the Sixers biggest weakness. This isn't the only Summer League team Ahearn is playing on (he's also playing for the Knicks in Vegas), but on both rosters Ahearn should have the same goal: show he can latch on to an NBA roster as a strong bench player. Maybe I'm giving the guy the benefit of the doubt because he was drafted by the Spurs, but I think he'd be a solid 3 point threat off the bench for either team, but he might not get the minutes on this roster that he will on the Knicks roster because he is a Sixers invitee.
Dionte Christmas
- Christmas is also an invite of the Sixers. I don't know a lot about him since I don't watch a lot of college ball anymore and Temple doesn't have the profile it did during the Cheney era. (National games aren't as abundant as they used to be, and I believe the A-10 isn't as good as it used to be either, but I could be wrong). Christmas is an undrafted free agent whose name I first heard when Temple played Duke (I think Duke) early in the season and he had a good game (didn't he?). I know that he's popular with many Sixers fans just from reading the blogs out there -- lots of fans do like him. Here's a guy just trying to get his shot with an NBA team, but will he get the minutes from the Nets coaching staff? Christmas will get a second chance to prove himself as it seems he's signed with the Clippers for the Vegas Summer League. I know a few people out there who would hate "Christmas in Los Angeles". How can you have Christmas with no snow
Summer League games in Orlando start July 6th, and the Nets/Sixers team plays in the first game at 3 pm local time. I just checked the NBA TV schedule and the ESPN schedule and saw no sign of Summer League games being on TV. The Nets page referenced earlier indicates you might be able to watch online, but NBA online video just isn't as good as MLB video yet. They use Adobe Flash Player, which if inferior to the MLB product, in my opinion.
So that's it. That's my Sunday morning rambling about Summer League and why I'm disappointed in the Sixers do not have their own team. Yes, I realize Summer League isn't a huge deal (remember when John Salmons wowed a guy like Larry Bird with some of the moves he made?) but I still think a 'Sixers only' team would have had a chance to learn some things that the mixed squad won't -- especially since it's made up of 8 Nets players.
One more note. I don't know if he'll ever stick in the NBA but there's one undrafted free agent name to watch if you can find him anywhere: Ben Woodside. Woodside went to North Dakota State and is from a small town in Minnesota. He will play for the Wolves in the Las Vegas Summer League. He's a guy I wish the Sixers had invited to the Summer League, but that's my own personal bias. I have no illusions about him being more than a 9/10 guy of a bench, but he just seems like he'd be a good guy to have on a bench if your only point guards are Louis Williams and Jrue Holiday.

Ok – thanks – I just didn’t recognize the names – so six sixers and six nets – slightly more balanced – but I still don’t like the set up :)

i think all he needs to do on the defensive end is be more physical and bulk up. IMO he has an uncanny knack for timing his jumps and is a good shot blocker. sorry i just realized that noone asked me

He needs to work on rebounding / timing / positinoing as well I think…and just knowing where to be

Forbes
I wouldn’t be surprised if he made some noise on this team. He’s a guy I’d liken to a Stephen Graham. A bit undersized, but has a decent offensive game, and would contribute as one of the last few guys on the bench. Our bench was so awful last year that I’d love to have a bunch of young guys fill it out and improve.
We're all puppets, Laurie. I'm just a puppet who can see the strings.
Forbes was pretty awful for the Wiz in SL last year
They were going to give him the 15th roster spot until he played so badly in SL.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
I’m biased for all A-10 guys, so take my opinions with an optimistic grain of salt. I’d love to see Jimmy Baron, Chris Lowe, and Aaron Jackson get a shot too.

Final score 72-67 Pacers in OT
Apparently Speights and Holiday worked some nice 2-man game. I’m thinking this is more of a collaboration with the Nets than we originally thought, but maybe that’s because the Sixers updates didn’t mention any Nets guys. It is summer league, but it’s always good to see production. 28 and 11 for M16. I’m fine with the amount of jump shots, he’s gotta be able to stroke it in the Princeton.

Jrue's defense and hustle were impressive.
He even took a charge with a minute to go. He also had two or three blocks.

Yeah, I didn’t like the way Speights conducted himself at all.
Jrue reminded me of the way Thad played in his firs summer league — really raw — but there’s clearly talent.
BTW Ahearn and Christmas showed ZERO.
Except this is Speights second summer league after a year in the NBA, he should know where he needs to get better, should have been working since season end and should be showing it at summer league, lack of anything new disconcerting

I wouldn't look too much into it.
If you look back at my 4-5 summer league recaps last year, I was saying the same things about Thaddeus. Last year Thad looked like a ball hog, a worse player and like he hadn’t worked on a single thing all summer — which is what Speights looked like today. We all know how Thaddeus turned out.

EVERYBODY here has used sarcasm on this blog and it works more times than it doesn’t. maybe u always fail to recognize it but you are not the only person that matters
http://www.libertyballers.com/
I`m not sure if you have the right to declare when sarcasm works and when it does not.
However, if you read, for example, peoples` comments on philly news.com about the sixers. You hear so many of them write comments like, “Bring back IVERSON!! IGUODALA SUCKS!!!!” Basically they are comments written by people who don`t really watch basketball. I wouldn`t be surprised if some of those people made their way onto this page. In my opinion, it was worth asking if you were one of them.
I`m not sure if you understand what you wrote, either. You said, “HE SUCKED.” That could mean he sucked this past year, in general, making no reference to his previous year on the team.
So yeah, I`m going to “play” you like that. It has nothing to do with self-esteem. I`m not sure if you understand the definition of self-esteem. Let`s not get so emotional now. Whether you want to admit to it or not, sarcasm is not something easily conveyed on a blog.

That was my major problem with him last season as well. If he can occasionally hit long jumpers, great. But he’s 6’10", 250lbs — he shouldn’t be playing 20 feet from the basket.
by zfg on Jul 7, 2009 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions
And it looks like he’s working on getting farther from the basket, instead of closer, and this is the kind of thing that the coaching staff could work on IF the summer league team were ‘all sixers’ – but with this split squad/staff nonsense who really knows. Just another mis-step by the cost conscious Comcast.
Now, if you read Iguodala’s twitters, I’m starting to wish the sixers skipped Orlando altogether and sent Holiday Speights Williie etc…and sam if he could get off his ass…to Iguodala, Thad and Lou are working, at least they’d be working together, which would be huge for Jrue

I would like to see Speights develop a post up game
However, he has a nice shot from about 15-20 feet away. I guess if he doesn`t have his teammates and coaches really working with him at the moment, i don`t see a problem in him practicing long jumpers. He was one of the few players last year to have a good long-range jumper. The team could use that at times.
I guess summer league is just a fire away kind of thing, so I’m not too upset about it yet. The jumper is certainly a weapon, and I have no problem with him taking it if it’s set up for him, or if the opposing defense gives it to him. However, with his size an athleticism, Speights should be a rebounding machine on both ends of the court. He’s got other stuff to work on with it, obviously, but being away from the rim is not helping.
by zfg on Jul 7, 2009 5:50 PM PDT up reply actions
I’m upset when his post game quotes talk about working on his range as opposed to working on closer to the basket :)

No doubt.
I think he`ll develop a nice rebounding game in the next year or so. The guy has a lot of potential. I can see him being a good shot-blocker as well.
My fear is the coaches will try to focus too much on his shooting game, causing him to develop more as a role-player. I see him having the potential to be a starter in the future. Of course, being a PF/C who can shoot threes or long-range jumpers is nice to have on a team, but he can`t be a starter unless he develops a post-up game.
Did you read the quotes from Jordan and Stefanski affter the first game. They were negative towards Speights approach to the game, and his staying on the perimeter and gunning. Stefanski felt he should have gotten more assists and rebound, Jordan felt he shouldn’t be attempting 3’s.
It’s up to SPEIGHTS to work to improve the weaknesses in his game from last year – his strength was his ‘range’ – and in his own words, he’s working on extending out his range – away from the basket not close – where he should be working on defense, rebounding and posting up.
Speights will end up what he wants to be….if he doesn’t work at being a rebounder, a real NBA big man, a defensive presence, then he won’t ever be much more than he was last year.
There’s no way that’s up to the coaches, that’s up to Speights to improve his weaknesses in the off season…if he’s not willing to work on his weaknesses he’ll just be another Sam…guy with potential who never works through it.
I’m not worried about the coaches and how they use him I’m worried about speights not thinking he needs to improve defensively or rebounding…this was always the warnings about speights, work ethic, dedication, this off season is all on him to improve his weaknesses, not the coaching staff…if he doesn’t improve his weaknesses, the way I see it, it’s on him, and no one else.

by jemagee on Jul 7, 2009 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions
If he’s always used to take pick and pop jumpers, or always gets the ball away from the rim, that could certainly hurt his development of an inside game. But yeah, his defense and rebounding is 100% on him… and that’s really the thing he needs the most improvement with.
by zfg on Jul 7, 2009 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions
You`re right
And no I didn`t read the quotes. I`m glad that they think he needs to work on his post game.
However, it`s mostly up to Speights, but not entirely. The coaches have to be there to work with him and make suggestions on improvement. Perhaps provide him with some resources.
He needs a personal mentor, like Ewing is to Howard.
In the off seson is when a player does most of his improvement, and that’s on his own, thta’s thad and Iguodala and Williams working with mark price, on their own time, that’s Kyle Korver working in the off season, on his own to get better.
That’s not what sam does.
A young player like Speights in my opinion, his improvement is on him, he’s so raw, at exit interview he should go ‘what do i need to do to improve?’…the coching staff tells him, and then he should work on it, on his own

Right, but
wouldn`t Speights improve with a Patrick Ewing-type veteran at his side?
I remember last year Moses Malone was working with Sam (probably only for a day until sam threw a hissy-fit). A player like Speights could really benefit with a personal mentor even during the regular season.

Unfortunately
I get the impression that john was right in terms of what he said about summer league in his free-agency post: that’s it’s basically a glorified pickup game. I don’t know how the coaches who are actually there view it (I hope they see it as more), but I’m afraid that the players DO see it that way and don’t take it very seriously: it’s in a small gym in front of a minuscule crowd, the games don’t count, and the Sixers aren’t even playing entirely with their teammates – not to mention that the coaches have basically no leverage here. And while I agree with everything that’s been said here so far – Speights needs to stop gunning, get to the hoop, and rebound and play D; Jrue should also be driving the lane; etc. – I’m hesitant to take it too seriously. It may well be that both Marreese and Jrue know what they need to do and may even have been working on it – but perhaps they see the Summer League games and just a chance to have some fun playing basketball. I think we all know how tempting it is to do things like jack 3s in a game that doesn’t matter, even when you know that’s not your strength. So I’m not inclined to take performance or tendencies from summer league too seriously. Wait until they get back with their team and real coaches to evaluate. I’ll take a lot more from the preseason.
Yeah you`re right
I don`t see a point in this if they`re not taking the opportunity to get better at something personally.

He did take a charge in the first game – i love that the dude plays defense (and well) in summer league – can you miagine when the games count?

By far my favorite part about him.
If you’re playing D in the SL, you know you’re gonna play D when it counts.
It’s the summer league…how much defense do they play in your playground games? Same thing

On a completely different note.
I downloaded the updated rosters on NBA 2k9 and Holiday isn’t very good.
He’s a rookie drafted 17th – and they probably ignored his defense :)

how did holiday play on wednesday?
the stats don’t always tell all.
SOunds like he still looks a little overmatched offensively, but sixers twitter said that Holiday and Speights pulled off a couple pick and rolls pretty well – defensively he’s a ball hawk – in summer league – i love to hear that

It's official
Shawn Marion S&T to Dallas. 5 years, 40 million dollars!
In that S&T: Stackhouse to Grizzlies, Draft picks & cash to Toronto.
Raptors are looking to sign Turkoglu.
Kidd did re-sign with the Mavs.
Magic get a trade exception in this four year deal close to 8 mil

Marcus Hayes on yesterdays game, a few notes on Holiday and Christmas and maybe a good note on Speights…I don’t now if Hayes is actually there or is just cobbling from AP reports?

BTW the Scrapple are down 11 early in the 2nd quarter

Holiday came in and helped
the Scrapple pull within 6. His defense has really been on point.
Christmas is playing well on offense. Speights getting frustrated down low by Byron Mullens, who’s playing very well.
