Day 2 Vegas Summer League: Live thread

It's Saturday afternoon. I'm sure the last thing you want to do is spend $14.99 to watch a bunch of non-Sixers Summer League teams play online. However; if you are hardcore NBA fan such as myself, do it. Just do it. Where else can you see James White v. Stephen Curry? Where else can you see Adam Morrison score 20+ points? When else can you sit on a live game thread and chat with yours truly as I sit on press row with the likes of David Aldridge and Sam Amick?! The answer is nowhere but the 2009 Las Vegas Summer League.

In all seriousness, if you happen to be near a computer today between the hours of noon and 9 p.m. pacific, join me on the thread. I can do anything, from chat about the Sixers to, take requests of questions to ask players/coaches. We have access to all the players, but without my boys Jrue, Speights and Sam here, I'm struggling to find a player I actually want to ask a question to. This is your chance to fire away. Me and Wayne have vowed to step our games up today.

For what it's worth, I've adopted the Pistons, Rockets and Cavilers. Since the Sixers bailed on me, and the bloggers of these teams couldn't make the trip to Vegas, I've volunteered to cover them to the best of my abilities. I can't wait to ask Danny Green if he's dunked on LeBron yet.

Now I'm off to shower and head to the Cox Pavilion. I'll try to take some pictures today, but my iPhone really isn't doing the job.

Let us know how Christmas or any other rookie FA’s who might fit as the 14th man are doing…

Who else besides Christmas would that be?

I don’t think Ahearn played well enough to warrant a spot on our roster, and if he plays well here he’ll probably end up on the Knicks. Christmas on the other hand seems to prefer the Sixers.

I plan on asking Christmas a few questions if I can.

For Dionte

Ask if him playing at Temple didn’t allow him to showcase all his abilities. Does he see himself as just a spot up shooter, or could he handle the ball, improve on D, become a slasher, etc?

He has to make our roster. There’s so many spots open, I can’t see us signing 4 to veterans minimum.

No one has to make the roster. If he didn’t go to Temple I’m willing to bet most people wouldn’t care about him on the sixers. If he gets an unguaranteed contract that’s great, but he is not vital to the sixers next season on or off the roster…there’a bigger issues

I still don't understand your position

If you don’t think this team is capable of contending this year, then what minor moves (since there are nothing huge surfacing) would help in the long run? If according to you we can’t contend, what’s the purpose of spending money on a team that won’t win?

I’m a fan of college basketball. The fact that Christmas went to Temple has no bearing on my opinion of him other than I got to see him play more. I think he’d be a good fit on this team. I would think the same about Jermaine Taylor if he were on our summer league team, but it’s Christmas, so that makes more sense, to me, that he would make our roster.

I wrote an entire treatise on what I thought the sixers should do in free agency and where the areas of import are. Strengthening the bench was third and much less insignificant.

By the way you said ‘has to’ make the team. A career bench player doesn’t ‘have’ to make a tem that’s trying to learn a new system and integrate 4 new players.

I mean “has” in the way someone would say “they have to win this game.” If that makes it any clearer. I saw your treatise. I read it and commented on it. But I don’t think you ever came to a clear point for when you think this team can win a championship. If we’re not going to win a championship now, why get a point guard to start in front of Holiday? Who cares if he’s not ready — throw him into the fire? Why not let Dalembert’s contract run out so he’s a valuable trade piece next year, or at least when his contract comes off the books? If you don’t think we can win now, what purpose would these moves serve? If we’re committed to winning in 2-3 years, we should plan strictly for two or three years, shouldn’t we? Who cares about a 5 win differential this year, when it’s not going to net us a championship?

Now this isn’t my opinion. I think that if we pick up a Chris Duhon (unlikely) or resign Andre Miller (I hope not) then we would have a shot to contend for a title. It’s a lot of ifs and question marks, but I think with Brand, Young, and Iguodala, we have three very good basketball players. Obviously championship teams need more, but I think there’s a better shot than you or most people are giving them. So I am in favor of a few tweaking moves that would help us win both this year and in the future, but based on what I’ve read of yours, you don’t think they are capable of winning anyway. To me at least (and I do appreciate what you do on here for the most part), you get caught playing devil’s advocate too much and you end up arguing against yourself trying to prove other people wrong.

I disagree whole heartedly – you got a new coach and 4 (basically) new players.

How often does a team with 4 new players and a new coach contend for a title?
