Now the Sixers aren't making a trade?
A significant trade before the Feb. 19 deadline? Doesn't sound like it.
"Right now, I don't see anyone I would say would fit in as well as Reggie Evans and Marreese Speights," president/general manager Ed Stefanski said. "Players in this league are resilient. They're all disappointed right now, but at the same time it's an opportunity for someone else. I'd be disappointed if Reggie and Marreese didn't jump on this opportunity and make something of it."
If there had ever been any thought of trying to trade the expiring contract of point guard Andre Miller at the deadline, that would almost certainly have equally lessened. If the Sixers are to have any chance of reaching the playoffs, Miller is their only experienced player at the position and has been playing at a very high level. -- Philadelphia Daily News
Honestly, I'm tired of all the trade/non-trade rumors. February 19th needs to come and go already, so we can get along with the rest of the season. I'm rooting for a trade, specifically of Andre Miller or Sam Dalembert. I mean, both are playing very well as of right now, but as assembled, is this team going to do any better in the playoffs than they did last season? I don't think so. They MIGHT be able to get out of the first round, but it's not likely.
Make this trade, get a young point guard full of potential, along with an expiring contract, a legitimate 3-point shooter and possibly a draft pick. Getting Sergio, Martell and possibly a draft pick is a whole lot better than letting Miller walk, or giving him a monster extension.

If they’ve decided ‘no trade so we can make the playoffs this year’ – i’m done with stefanski – cause it’s idiot short term thinking like that that led to a plethora of bad trades by Billy King

i don’t see how he can justify not trading miller if he going to walk at the end of the year. I don’t care if we make the playoffs and chances are that we would still make them even if we traded miller.
yeah we'd still make the playoffs
i like him, but we need to get what we can for him.

Agree. What’s so valuable about another 40-42, 7th seed farce?

There’s an argument that the bottom half of the east is so weak that keeping Miller could get you the 4/5 seed – and possibly a playoff round win before you get knocked out – so some extra home playoff games – and the second round might get more people

read this page every day

I hope this is just bluster – they SHOULD be listening to deals on almost every player – very few on this roster should be untouchable – and MIller should be made ‘available’ for the long term.
BTW – there’s some articles on that rumors page today that indicate that miller wanted an extension but the sixers weren’t giving it to him (of course it doesn’t mention if it was 5 years 60 million that he wants) but CSN Philadelphia is implying that MIller wouldn’t mind staying.

I’d be on board with a reasonable 2-3 year deal. Probably 3 yr/21M would be my absolute ceiling.
I think he might be worth more, but I don’t want him getting more than 6M this summer so that they can still use the MLE and be under the tax.

unless something drastic happens
we’re probably not going to be legitimate contenders for a few years. and by legitimate i mean lakers, cavs, celtcs legit. by the time that happens andre miller will be too old. trade him.
i flip-flop on this every day.

Yes, the “something drastic” was supposed to be the acquisition of Brand, a top 10 PF. The rest of the roster is promising and fun to watch, but if Brand is not the answer, then they are really stuck given they have 4 more years and 67M committed to him. It was a make or break move- even though it seemed like the obvious move at the time.

Yes.
It seemed like the obvious move at the time, and Stefanski probably does is 10 out of 10 times. I’m fine with that. I would’ve done the same.
That being said, it hasn’t worked. I’m a strong believer that it’ll never work. I don’t think we’re talking about the same top 10 PF anymore. I think a trade of Brand would’ve made perfect sense, whether Ed could’ve gotten Amare or an expiring contract. An expiring contract would’ve allowed the Sixers to admit the mistake and start over. That’s why the injury is even worse than him just missing the rest of the season.
Now the logical thing would be to showcase Sam’s skills over the next two weeks and try and trade him and/or Andre Miller.
If the deadline passes without a Sixers trade I won’t be too happy.

Agreed
It seems obvious that there are two choices here: keep the status quo and suffer through a mediocre season, or make an aggressive move in building toward the future. I like Andre Miller as a player but he is the Sixers’ most valuable commodity. They need to get better on the perimeter and moving Andre at the height of his value is the best way to do so. This team can’t win a championship even with a healthy Elton Brand, so they need to start addressing the primary deficiencies and Miller is the best option to do that. I would like to see him moved.

Unfortunately, they are in a tough spot. Even if they get a good return for Miller, they still need to find a good replacement. Hinrich is not on the market, so the options are not great. If they draft a PG it will be a few years before they are ready. Not a big deal given the team’s youth… except for the guy with a bum shoulder…

Miller's contract
I am for trading Andre Miller BUT why are we always concerned about what he gets paid? Comcast makes plenty of money off my cable bill (and yours), I don’t mind them overpaying to help the sixers win! Now, if it will not help us win it all, then, of course, trade him. But, lets stop worrying about money and worry about winning. btw, I kind of get that is the feeling Ed has also, not worried about money but winning! Until I am proved wrong, I will continue to believe in the sixers! Go sixers!
you have to worry about money
there is such a thing as a salary cap and overpaying for one player can really hinder a franchise…..if this were baseball you would be right… and andre miller is not the key to bringing a championship……. i say trade him and draft either jonny flynn or patrick mills in the draft
by Tanner Steidel on Feb 6, 2009 11:34 PM PST up reply actions
Why?
A. Because teams worry about what players get paid and that factors in – so if you want to rationally and reasonably discuss your teams future you have to take into account what they do.
B. Comcast is a publicly traded company, it’s a recession (can’t say the d word even though we’re on our way there) and they are answerable to a board of directors and stockholders who only care about the bottom line – PROFIT – they won’t throw money around to win a basketball game unless you can convince them it will also increase profits.
