The Recommendation Corner

Yes, I'm aware that this won't be a basketball or sixers related post, however at the same time, we do end up polluting basketball posts by tangents of recommendation and discussion of things like movies and books (ok, so usually I instigate it, but not always), and I still haven't gotten the gumption up to start my own blogs.  So I'm throwing this up here for a place for folks to ask for or make recommendations fo books / movies etc...so most of jordans posts can be made mainly about basketball.

Star-divide

Last night Jordan asked for comedy recommendations and it was determined that he is woefully under populated in some of the classics.

John Belushi films, I don't know if he's seen it - but any mel brooks movies also should be seen immediately.

The Great Dictator while having funny moments isn't purely a comedy - but a very important film (even for when it was made, but thinking about what it's about and when it was made you can see that not only was chaplin brilliant, he recognized a coming evil sooner than most people)

Albert Brooks is more esoteric - Defending your Life, Mother...both excellent but more high brow

i like the idea

we can also use this post for talking about anything non-basketball related, like the voice of our generation, kayne west.

He's the man.

‘History of the World Part 1’ and ‘Blazing Saddles’ are classic

At least someone got it right – robin hood and spaceballs are ‘weak’ mell brooks movies.

Check out Young Frankenstein, Silent Movie, the Producers, To be or not to be…

And in his prime – steve marting – the jerk, the lonely guy….these are some classics people i’m giving you GOLD here…

you must

Dave Chappelle in his early stages, great movie.

If you like really stupid humor, I’m talking this is probably the ‘stupidest thing I’ve ever seen’ funny, then watch Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. I appreciate all kinds of humor, even this kind.

If you want classic humor with more of a plot, then watch Ferris Bueller’s Day off or Office Space.

I personally like any of Adam Sandler’s (earlier) or Chris Farley’s movies:
-Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy (Sandler)
-The Black Sheep, Tommy Boy, Beverly Hills Ninja (Farley).
I’m going to assume you’ve seen some of those though.

There’s some for now.

Its all up to personal taste

Some things like Animal House or Airplane (I speak Jive…) are funny to just about anyone.

Other classics like Monty Python (Grail) or Spinal Tap are dependent on personal taste.

2 good (non-sport) movies.

The Boondock Saints (“Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day” comes out really soon)
Layer Cake (Daniel Craig b4 he was bond, a lot of different “layers going on” so you have to pay attention to the plot (The opposite of a Michael Bay film))

"Leave Michael Alone!" - said like that Brittany Spears fan on youtube

+1 for Layer Cake.

Yes +4 for layer cake
Jason Statham – an under appreciated actor – if you don’t think he can act – see the bank job
Dudes my favorite ‘pointless action hero’ right now – transporter movies, crank movies, hell even death race.

There’s some movies out there that are trilogies but really only the first one is worth seeing

Matrix and Pirates of the Carribean

If you want to see good baseball movies – look for kevin costner – or a good golf movie – again look for kevin costner.

Good boxing movies that people might not have seen – undisputed with snipes

I mean I could go on and on about movies and books :)

I’ll just say the ‘idiot’ movies of Adam Sandler do not appeal to me – but I do enjoy Wedding Singer, Big Daddy, Punch Drunk Love, Spanglish and reign over me with don cheadle and the remote control movie a little…the stuff he started is career with i really don’t like.

Though I find the will ferrell idiot movies (at least anchorman and the ballad of ricky bobby hysterical)

And if you haven’t seen the dewey cox story – you’re missing out – john c reilly is the shiznit

It’s quite hysterical, it parodies not only various famous musicians but various famous (and infamous) music movies and events…it’s quite hysterical….

Oh yeah – another GREAT parody movie – tropic thunder – ranks up there with mash in a different way as a ‘satire’ of the standard war movie….the folks who make those awful ‘disaster movie’ nonsense should watch a movie like tropic thunder and realize THATs how you parody something.

Tom Cruise – even if you hate him – you will LOVE him in tropic thunder – and when you realize it’s him you’ll freak out

Hated Tropic Thunder

Thought it was one big Hollywood insider type of joke that wasn’t funny enough to warrent an entire movie.

http://www.phillyarena.com - Philly sports forum/blog

by tk76 on Oct 9, 2009 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Having a boss who ‘was’ a hollywood insider he did explain that the tom cruise thing was based on folks (in fact he said he was kind of a big ass at the time)

But it wasn’t as ‘insider’ as the player was (and i loved that movie) – it wasn’t only a mockery of inside hollywood but public holly wood – come on – the whole ‘be a retard get an oscar thing’ – we all know how that works – plus at the same time they had almost ‘every war movie’ moment in that film but bassackwards.

And I’m sorry – but that scene with the baby where it looks like he’s running with the baby and then you see the baby stabbing him – that was awesome.

I hated

Tropic Thunder in the theater for some reason, now I watch it every time it’s on HBO. Love it when he throws the kid off the bridge at the end. Cracks me up every time.

i like denzel movies, the departed, shooter, crank (because it’s funny though). i can’t think of any more off the top of my head. i’m a comedy guy.

by jsams on Oct 9, 2009 6:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well when you’re ready to move beyond

Finding Forrester
Atoine Fisher (which has denzel but introduces derek luke to the world, and he is the shiznit…yo)
Michael Clayton
The Bourn Trilogy
National Treasure one and twoo (I’m fascinated by the career of ncolas cage and it’s good escapist fun PLUS has the guy from the hangover that they lose…big fan of his)
Sean of the Dead
Hot Fuzz
Run fatboy run

Surprisingly – Duplicity was a very good CAPER movie (marketed poorly as a romantic comedy) – it’s funny and has a great cast

Like Hoosiers, Rudy, Field of Dreams…

I have seen parts of Rudy, I hate sean astin, I hate Notre Dame football, so personally I’ll never see the entire movie.
For some reason have never seen hoosiers.

For some reason I’ve seen the majority of the ‘kid impacts a major league baseball team’ movies…little big league is my favorite.

“The Pistol” – Biography of ‘Pistol’ Pete Maravich, used to watch this before ever season with my whole basketball team. It’s awesome, if you haven’t seen it go out and find it RIGHT NOW.

John

read any good books lately? I’ve read everything by Gaimen and have just started the Dresden files…I’m looking for a few inbetween books while I plow through Dresden, (which I’ve become a big fan of from your recommendation).
BTW, ever watch the TV show? I’m not so crazy about it…

by SexualTyrannosaurus on Oct 12, 2009 3:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I did watch the TV show – I did not like it – I think they made it too light hearted…however, I hadn’t HEARD of the books until the TV show – so I give the tv show credit for that…introducing me to the books.

One series i can NOT recommned – the sookie stackhouse novels – inspiration for true blood – i read the first book and it looked like it was written by a teenager who never had sex – god it was awful.

I recently read a series of ‘novellas’ featuring jim butcher called mean streets – it introduces you to a few other ‘super natural’ type investigators – one of whom is an angel (literally) – It was quite interesting and put some more guys on my list.

I’m not a HUGE Dan Brown fan – but there are guys in his ‘genre’ who i think write better than he does – light reads – Raymond Khoury and Steve Berry -

Don’t know where you stand on the ‘juvenile’ literature revolution spurred by harry potter, but i’m a huge fan, cirque du freak (the coming movie looks god awful), artemis fowl, keys to the kingdom, uglies,

There’s this book that came out last year that i guess many could see as juvenile but it’s also a warning to be vigilant against your government and not let fear rule your thinking (and about how you can make a difference at any age) – it’s called little brother by corey doctrow – and if i had the money i’d want to option it for a movie -

If you like some hard core hard boiled sci fi – richard k morgan – start with altered carobn – read all the kovacs novels – check out Thirteen – but I haven’t read his new Sword/Sorcery book

GIbson is the father of cyberpunk – if you haven’t read him or stephenson yet you really aren’t a cyberpunk fan (admittedly I haven’t ready the baroque cycle on anathem but those books are HEAVY and LONG)

I read an interesting ‘dresden’ like novel a copule years ago – took place in boston – called unshapely things i think – there’s a second in the sries but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

If you're into Non-fiction at all

check out any Krakauer book. I just finished his latest, about Pat Tillman. Interesting stuff.

Also recommend anything by George Pelecanos. If anyone is into mysteries, let me know, I have dozens of recommendations.

Speaking of Mel Brooks, a friend just gave me a book his son wrote, The Zombie Survival Guide, which is completely dry and hilarious. And speaking of Zombies, I loved Zombieland and highly recommend it. Best cameo in years in that movie.

I watch way too much TV, see way too many movies and read way too many books. I guess there are worse vices to have, though.

Send GT Green packing.

Trust me brian – i have you topped

Thursdays at 9 pm – with two dvrs – i still don’t have enough viewing ability – 4 recordable slots 5 shows to view – thank goodness networks started with DVRs.

Heard good things about Zombie Survival Guide, plus world war z another ‘comedic’ zombie thing – and jane austen and zombies – i wonder if all this zombie humor points back to shaun of the dead.

If you like mysteires – and period stuff – my gf loves charles todd – me never was a huge mystery fan.

Non fiction stuff – I always recommend michael lewis’ book, all the way back to liars poker, and malcolm gadwell, freakonomics is just great for opening up your horizons and the way you look at things, if you see the buddha on the side of the road, run him over (or kill him) i’m not making that title up – jonathan livingston sseagull a really interesting book if you feel a bit direcitonless.

I read Freakonomics a while back, just read Outliers last week. It was interesting and somewhat frightening as a parent.

I had to curb my TV watching somewhat when I got married. Before I moved in w/ my wife I had 2 VCRs hooked up, plus Tivo and that still wasn’t enough for thursday nights :)

A TV recommendation I’ll make is Sons of Anarchy. Love that show.

Send GT Green packing.

by depressedfan on Oct 14, 2009 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sons of Anarchy rocks – but katy segal is just nutsy

Damages – awesome – but you WILL NOT like a single character on the show – none of them are likeable but it’s very enjoyable.

If you ever want to understand the way i think – read Blink by Galdwell…i’ve also heard very good things about ‘tribes’.

If you don’t know – XEROX should be the biggest most powerful corperation in the world – want to know how – read dealers of lightening about Xerox Parc and marvel that the people running xerox were so UTTERLY stupid
