Really glad to see the Sixers got the win and that Lou seemed to have played well.
Lets keep the ball rolling and get a good start to this season!

Real rough to watch on the internet but better than nothing! Did not realize how much I miss basketball.

I wish I had seem M16 play w/ the 1st team cause he looked lost in the last 1/3 of the game. I would bench him and send him to the D League if I was the coach!

After one half?

Like I said, I didn’t see Speights play with the first team, but his line indicated that he played very well. Don’t expect him to be playing with a lineup of Jrue, Royal, Christmas and Smith at any time during the season. Most of his poor play in the second half can be attributed to him being one of the focal points of the offense, and the only Sixer on the floor who could create his own shot. As much talent as Speights has he should never be a volume shooter/possession guy — at least not yet. Throw him in there with Brand, Andre and Lou like he was in the first half and let him get his shots off offensive rebounds and nice passes from the playmakers.

I believe you but he was so bad tonight that I saw! I don’t know how he did not foul out!

Thank you for some hope for M16 as I do like him and his playing (when he plays well, that is!).

I’m one of the people who was down on M16, but I think it’s too early to send him to the D-League, especially since it seems he played well with the first team tonight.

first team's first

M16 came in after Smith and Willie Green. The only first teamers on the court with him for a while were Iggy and Thad. Just go to nba.com and review the “courtside launch” gizmo for that game.

Jordan had Speights playing b/u centre and Smith b/u PF this game and he pulled Brand before Dalembert (who was doing well with his jumpers in the early going). Seems smart to me, not only in terms of giving Brand more blow, and putting him at lower risk of an owie, but also because Smith seemed to be player softer than Speights. You want the guy more willing to mix it up defending the cup.

It’s interesting that everyone’s sidestepping the one ton gorilla in the room: willie green’s stat line.

As many are saying, it’s early yet, it’s just the very first pre-season game. Guys should have fewer jitters tonight and fewer still as we go along. Hopefully we get to see more progress tonight.

Side-stepping Green’s line as in not talking about it?

by Jordan Sams on Oct 7, 2009 11:06 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I would hope any one who has been in this league more than 5m inutes wouldn’t have jitters during a pre season game.

Willie Greens ‘line’ in one game int he preseason is as relevant as dajuan blairs

super entity

you are a man of steel nerves, jemagee. smith at least admitted to nerves for the first bit. seems a normal and natural response for anyone who’s still in a position of having to prove something.

anyway, green was conspicuous by absence of mention. if he had a shite line, i rather suspect there’d be more vocalization ;-). this stuff is a cut above summer league, but, yes, it’s way early yet (repeat ad nauseum). remains to be seen if these are just freak, outlier performances or the first point of a real trend line.

My bad – I thought we were referring to willie green

If you missed an entire season due to injury ala jason smith – you are exempt from the previously aforementioned jitters…

but willie green should not have jitters – he might just suck

a case of the willies

no, i only had the one line re willie. the last parag was re the youth/second team in general.

this is probably about the only system in which willie has a chance of being mediocre.

A. Aside from a couple days with L-Will the sixers don’t seem to appreciate the D-League
B. Yeah Speights was terrible tonight, and Iguodala had 7 turnovers, and Holidays A:TO was 0

But it’s the first game of the pre season with a roster than had 4 new rotiation guys depending on how you look at it (Brand, Kapono, Holiday, Smith,) with a new coach and new system and new starter and 2 guys who haven’t layed the positions they’re starting in this season much in the last 2 seasons.

LONG way for this team to go

Speaking of long way's to go.

Jrue Holiday is not as far along as I thought. I’m not worried; I guess I just bought into all the hype. Even his defense, which is supposed to world-class, looked off tonight.

It`s the first pre-season game

I think the bigger issue is that there`s too much time inbetween games to think and discuss.
If they are playing like this by the last pre-season game, then we should be more concerned about the development of the players.

initial observations from last night

FYI …

Pre-season Game 1

Sixers were better than a bad Raptors squad [i.e. w/o Bosh & Turkoglu]. They will need to improve a great deal, if they intend to compete for a playoff spot in the EC this season.

Could you please explain what you mean by “not quite”?

You’re saying that the Sixers need to improve a “great deal” if they want to compete for a playoff spot? After one pre-season game? Really?

by Jordan Sams on Oct 7, 2009 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

You’re comprehension of the 15 teams in the eastern conference and who is and isn’t a legitimate playoff contender if you think the sixers need to improve a ‘great deal’ to compete for one of the 8 spots.

Although I haven’t been able to see each of the teams in the EC play just yet, these are the ones who look like solid contenders for a playoff spot early on:

1-3 Bos, Orl and Cle

4-6 Atl, Was and Mia

7-9 Chi, Cha and Det

Trying to catch up at this point would be …

Phi, Tor, Ind, Nyk, Njn and Mlw

based on the composition of their current rosters, head coach and the initial games played this week.

Obviously these assessments are not carved in stone just yet and will remain fluid over the next 3 weeks, pending further developments.

The sixers get elton brand back and some bench players
The wizards get gilbert arenas back and some bench players

Flip Saunders couldn’t win in detroit – eddie jordan does more with less than most coaches

And you put the wizards in the top 6 and move the sixers out of the playoffs.

Then you imply that you are looking at pre season gams as a factor to determine who is playoff capable – the first week of practices.

So – yeah – let’s stick with not quite.

Around here we don’t hand out credibility and believability without EARNING it

Theres literally one reason to dislike Willie Green at this point, and thats his contract. His line isnt far off from what I expect from him. I definitely trust him more than Carney, Jrue or Ivey.

by jmorcate on Oct 7, 2009 3:02 PM PDT reply actions

Jrue and Ivey, yes.

I still like Carney better, but it’s close.

by Jordan Sams on Oct 7, 2009 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s incorrect – his game sucks – he shoots too much he doesn’t pass enough – he’s the least efficient player in the NBA and seems allergic to drawing fouls.

There’s many reasons to dislike willie green – and in my opinion his contract doesn’t matter – cause Billy Kings the idiot on that one (twice no less)

You may ‘trust’ green more than holiday

but if you want a team that’s building towards WINNING A TITLE – you want willie green begone and to find out what holliday can become sooner than later
