Poll: Are you excited yet?

We conducted this poll exactly 2 months ago and the top three results were:

"Poopy" - 17%

5 - 11%

6 - 10%

The regular season is approximately four days away, and even though we begin the season by playing the team I think will end up NBA champs, I'm pretty excited. Two months ago, I rated my enthusiasm for the upcoming season as a '5'. It now stands at '9'.

Take the poll.

And make your final predictions in the comments so we can either A) all point and laugh at you in April or B) think you're the smartest life form in the blogosphere.

i say 46 wins. 5th in East. Thad becomes a monster. and elton averages 15-8. Andre becomes more of a PG than Lou. Jrue is starting by the end of the year because he develops and Loe is better off the bench.

by philsfreak6 on Oct 24, 2009 1:17 PM PDT reply actions

i mean andre has more assists and carries the ball more in crunch time.

Its kinda hard to get excited since theres only 3 or 4 teams in the NBA that can realistically win it all. The Sixers are stuck in this “too good for the lottery, but too bad to get out of the first” round purgatory that is killing my excitment.

Still have a lot of good talent.

And where were the Magic in “teams who could realistically win it all” last year?

by Jordan Sams on Oct 24, 2009 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

They werent there, and you know what? They didnt win! One of the teams that could have realistically won it won.

I know.

But they made it, and this year, they’re one of those teams!

by Jordan Sams on Oct 24, 2009 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions

With their roster – tye were pretty much the favorite to win their division and compete in the east…

Let’s not compare the sixers to the magic roster of last year any time soon shall we

I said 9

44 wins but thats good enough for 5th in the East

by chillicothe20 on Oct 24, 2009 4:19 PM PDT reply actions

I think more teams in the east will be high 30s to 40 wins this year. I see the sixers getting about 42, 43 wins, which should be good enough for 5th. That’s probably their only real shot for getting into the second round. Still, this year is very important for their development and will give the fans a real view of how far this team can actually go.
All eyes on Jordan.

I like 41 to 43 wins

and 4th to 6th in the East. First round series goes to 6, with a Sixers win.

despite what I posted above. i was a little unnecessarily optimistic up there.

It’s quite possible that they could go an entire season without learning anything. Some might even digress to a point where they forget what a basketball looks like.

Prediction

46-50 wins. 4th in East.

As an incurable optimist, I believe Brand will regain his 20/10 form, Jrue will become a successful pro, Carney will surprise and Speights will play defense.

by Duracorr on Oct 25, 2009 1:35 PM PDT reply actions

I said 8. I go with 45-50 wins, barring injuries. Dre becomes an absolute monster. Thad is his main sidekick with Brand in a tag-team. Lou Williams becomes a pleasant surprise. As per usual, Team has a kickass second-half(hopefully sparked by Jrue “getting it” and turning his game up). Carney & Kapono play well with Smith helping to spread the floor. Possibly a 2nd round team.

by MojoPharoah on Oct 25, 2009 2:19 PM PDT reply actions

I said 7, only excited because baseball is almost done and I just can never get too excited for the Eagles. I expect the team to be as inconsistent as always with a few wins against teams like LA, Boston, etc. and losses to teams like Minn, the other LA, Sacramento resulting in 40-44 wins and probably a 1st round loss.

by jmorcate on Oct 25, 2009 3:35 PM PDT reply actions

i know a lot of people are not a fan of brand trade rumors but...

this deal kind of struck me as interesting. my friend is a bobcats fan (it’s really sad) and he asked me, "would you trade brand for diaw and bell? " at first, i kind of thought “no way!” but as i thought about it really intrigued me. bell has an expiring contract and can shoot the 3. diaw would fit really well with this motion offense, he can shoot the 3 (42% clip last year), he has some nice post moves, he can run, he is a great passer, and he can defend any position. plus the thought of getting rid of brand allows more pt for speights and smith, and would put more emphasis on feeding guys like thad the ball. and best of all diaw’s contract expires the same summer that sam’s and willie’s expires, so the sixers will have a huge amount of cap space that summer.

it seemed stupid at first, but the deal seems a little more appealing now. i know it is kind of pointless to dream about stuff like that, but i kind of wanted to see if anybody else would do that deal.

excited to see basketball

…but my expectations are muted. I think the win tota has a lot to do with how much the team can win ugly. The first half of the year the will have to win on talent alone since the offense will be a work inprogress.. Maybe the defence will help, but bad offense puts stress on the defence.

I'm at a 10

I just want the Season to start so I can start watching basketball.

I think we could be a 50 win team assuming Brand can give us close to 20-10 and Lou Williams doesn’t completely fall apart (I almost don’t expect him to be starting deep in the season)

i'm pumped and ready to go

as for predictions: i say hovering around .500 again (42 wins i say) and a round one playoff win ONLY if a 4 or 5 seed is achieved. iguodala gets his first all-star nod and we get extremely disappointed at how little ej plays jrue in favor of lou and bill (at least at the beginning of the season until he may actually realize that bill is not adequate). bring on the season though – i will be in attendance for the home opener on friday

by Tanner Steidel on Oct 26, 2009 8:34 AM PDT reply actions

I said 7.

Which means that I’m optimistic, but realistically not thrilled. Face it, unless a team has a reasonable chance of getting to the finals, you can’t get more excited than a 7.

As it is, to have a realistic chance means being able to beat Boston, Orlando or Cleveland in a seven game series. Actually two of them since you’d also think that these teams will all finish with a better record than the Sixers.

I figure the team will surprise to the upside and show that they are the fourth best team in the East. They will win about 50 games, be more competitive in their games against the Elite teams, but won’t be able to beat out Boston or any of the others.

If the Sixers are within 5 games of the lead at the end of the season, I’ll be pleasantly surprised. If they win a 2nd round series, it will be because Speights, Iguodala and Young are all putting up very good numbers and Brand is able to draw double-teams inside. Then, I’d get really excited. That might happen next season as Thad, Lou and Mareese get better and Andre and Elton continue to perform at an exceptional level.

On the positive side, they have a much better line-up than last season. Williams will speed up the pace of the game and the Sixers offense will get started faster than with Miller. With a starting line-up of Brand, Young, Iguodala and Williams, they are as talented as any team without a good starting Center. Speights and Smith coming off the bench is a huge improvement compared with trying to play Reggie Evans at Center! Kapono can shoot and Rodney Carney is much more athletic than anyone we had last season. Willie Green is now your third best guard and is on his way to becoming your 4th or 5th depending on Carney and Holiday. This in itself is a major improvement, and by itself should translate into a better record.

It’s possible that the 2nd team will be better than the first, since it doesn’t have the Dalembert factor. Which is what I call an offensive black hole, someone who destroys sucks the life out of a play.

It appears that Jason Smith will be able to contribute to the team this season, if he can provide meaningful minutes he might be enough to put the Sixers into contention this season.

All the Sixers needed was a slightly stronger interior defense and and better scoring in the half-court. We now have outside shooters and 3 inside players in Brand, Speights and Smith. But this is the year when they see how close they are and how far. Since this depends on three unknowns, Brand’s ability to score the way he used to, Speights ability to become a go-to post player, and Smith’s ability to do the same, it seems like a real reach for all three to be above average players at their positions.

The closer Smith and Speights are to playing on both ends of the floor, the closer this Sixers are to challenging for the title.

This is the transition year. Building toward the future. They have a lot of young talented pieces and need to allow them to gel

by MojoPharoah on Oct 27, 2009 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Well. THAT'S an optimist's view.

I’m not saying that this is impossible. But I think there are too many questions to have it work out like this.

  • Iguodala: has he really made all of these strides? I agree he could well be an All-Star this season. But how will he handle the new role under the new coaching?
  • Brand: I certainly haven’t given up on him. But can he fit in with this team? Can he regain the explosiveness that made him a perennial 20-10 All-Star? Can he run the way this team will continue to need to?
  • Kapono: I love the acquisition. But his biggest problem – strangely enough – is that he just doesn’t shoot enough. Can Eddie convince to stop trying to dribble and pass all the time and just shoot?
  • Jordan: Will the Princeton work? How often will he run – too much, too little? When he does run it, will the players know it well enough to make it effective? If not, it could become a turnover factory. This is one of my biggest concerns. What about Jrue? How much will his famed reluctance to play rookies come out? Will it hurt his development? He has the skills and does the things that earn playing time – defense, hustle. Will Eddie give it to him?
  • Bill Green: He sucks. This we know. But how much will it affect the team? I’m glad he’s not starting. but he could be the 6th or 7th man, and is likely to be the primary backup guard. His skill set should be reasonably well suited to comparatively few minutes off the bench. But will he get too many? And will he produce with what he gets, or will he sulk and suck?
  • Speights: Will he play defense and stop shooting so much? Even though he’s not a bad shooter, that’s not what this team needs from him. He’s incredibly gifted around the basket – that’s where he needs to stay.
  • Sammy: Will he block enough shots for the team to have any semblance of an interior defense? This hasn’t been an issue in the past, but he’ll be asked to do more on the offense. How will it affect his defensive game? ANd speaking of offense… the PO generally asks the center, over everything else, to play intelligent basketball. Naturally, Sammy’s biggest problem has always been that he makes dumb, boneheaded plays. All the time. That will destroy this offense. Can he cut down on those?
  • Young and Smith: Frankly, I don’t have too many questions about either of them. Smith should be fantastic – I’m really excited to have him back. Can he stay healthy? How’s the knee? And Thad needs to continue to take steps forward, and establish a definite role. Will be able to do that?
  • The first unit: They’ll have to run, as always, but a lot will depend on how they handle the half-court/PO. It’s a very talented unit – even Sammy has skills – and should play excellent defense. But they can really play together and score effectively? How long will it take for them to gel?
  • The second unit: As far as second units go, as Ricko suggests, this one should actually be excellent. It can shoot, rebound, and defend.
  • The defense: I also have basically very few questions about this. It’s pretty much a known quantity. Iggy, Thad, Jrue, Sammy, Smith, Ivey, and Brand can. Kapono and Speights can’t or don’t. Bill and Lou are somewhere in between. The team will get killed occasionally – small forwards may be able to tee off on the second unit, making it susceptible to teams like Atlanta, Toronto, the Lakers, and the Cavs. Big guys shouldn’t give this team too much of a problem.
Overall, I don’t think this is a great team. I think the realistic ceiling is 5th in the East, 4th if they’re really lucky (i.e., another team has a lot of injuries). I see maybe 42 or 43 wins, and a good series but probably a loss in the first round. There are a lot of pieces, to be sure. But there are so many questions that I think they’re maddeningly inconsistent again, beating a lot of really good teams and losing to a few bad ones. They will look like champions on nights when everything is working, which it will at times. And they’ll look like the Grizzlies on nights when nothing is, which we’ll also see. We’ll have to be quick to forget both the good and the bad this season. We’re watching an above-average team. It’s not an elite one, but all these questions do make it extremely interesting… and no one will accuse them of not being exciting.
Welcome to another season of Sixers basketball. Get pumped!

I have a bad feeling that a lot of fans are going to be really disappointed after another slow start. I can see them well under500 after the first two months unless they can win ugly.

Supposedly the P.O. is supposed to change this

And I’m not sure they can win as many ugly games without Miller. He had huge faults, but he did come through as a stabilizing force in a lot of those ugly wins.

For it to change – they need to KNOW the PO which they don’t yet

Is Miller that much of a loss when the player who’s taking the shot instead is Elton Brand or Thad Young? We have enough players who can break down their man and draw a foul. What we need is a strategy to attack a defense in a half-court situation, and I’m not sure Miller would have been such a great fit.

The PO is about getting everyone involved, passing the ball until you get an open, high-percentage shot. Most nights we won’t even see it. The team can win just on talent alone. But when they play good teams that force them to slow down, or manage to score on them, they need an offense to generate shots.

Seriously, if Iguodala is an all-star and Thad is a future all star and we also have Elton Brand, shouldn’t that be enough talent to contend for a title?

by RickoT on Oct 27, 2009 12:43 PM PDT reply actions

Miller did not shoot overly much unless no one else was shooting.

And no – the sixers don’t have enough talent to contend for a title when one of YOUR starting vie (two of them actually) probably wouldn’t start on any of the top 5 teams in the league – yo don’t have enough talent

finish

5-7 all depends on how quick the chemistry of the new offense comes, plus no matter what they will not finish in front of CLE,BOS,ORL, unless one of those teams has a huge injury. Im predicting that between them and WASH and ATL will compete for sports 4-6.
