Trade Front: Point Guards, Andre Miller and Elton Brand

Chad Ford has two articles up on ESPN.com. One is about the point guards being shopped around the league and another is about the teams shopping for point guards. Unfortunately, the Sixers aren't on the list of buyers, but a certain player did make the list of point guards being shopped.

Andre Miller, Sixers
Miller may be the most attractive player on the list for two reasons. One, he's a very talented veteran who can immediately step in and contribute on a number of contenders. Two, he's in the last year of his contract, which means teams don't have to commit long-term.

With the Sixers hovering around .500 and not looking like the title contenders we thought they would be, it might be time for the Sixers to make a move for the future. While Miller won't bring them back an All-Star in return, he could get them a future pick or another player who could help them down the road.

It's not hard to see that the Sixers' future looks brighter with their youth, not their veterans. While Miller might be the first casualty, it's not inconceivable that Elton Brand is next.

Chance of trade: 25 percent

This is interesting on so many levels. Read that last sentence one more time. "While Miller might be the first casualty, it's not inconceivable that Elton Brand is next." Really? Really? This is very interesting coming from Mr. Ford. I'm on the end of my lunch break, so I really can't go in-depth on this until later. But for those of you who can, by all means, discuss. Miller and Brand on the block?

Sorry, I’ve been quoting this in a bunch of places, but it fits the topic:

From Ryan F posting on Reclinergm about Chad Fords recent chat and Brand (bold added)

http://www.reclinergm.com/sixers-vs-chris-paul-tonight/#comment-11351

I dont want to get anyone’s head spinning with rumors so ill just paste the 3 questions he decided to respond to.

Patrick (Miami): Where does Marion end up Chad? Can the Heat get something better for him than O’Neal? Or do they hold on to him and then go after Boozer again this summer?

Chad Ford: (1:18 PM ET ) I think they have to see whether they can pry Boozer or Elton Brand for Marion. I think both are possible and both are better long term fits than O’Neal. The one positive for O’Neal is that he’s off the books in 2010. That gives the Heat LOTS of cap space in the summer of 2010. Of all the markets trying to clear cap … Miami is one of the most desirable for NBA free agents. The fact that Wade and Michael Beasley are there won’t hurt recruiting either.

Wannabe GM (Philly): C-Ford, considering how well the Sixers have played without Brand, both during their current 10-game stretch and towards the end of last year, do you think it may behove them to explore trading him either closer to the trade deadline or during the offseason? After hearing Tony DiLeo say that he does not plan to force feed EB the ball in the post and that he envisions him being a great trailer on the break, seems to me that they’ve committed A LOT of cap space for a "trailer". Maybe the could get nice pick in this years draft (pick up Harden) or get an established SG from someone?

Chad Ford: (1:23 PM ET ) Yes … from what my sources around the league are saying, Brand is available. The question is, given how poorly he’s played this year and his huge contract, does anyone want him?

Chad Ford: (1:24 PM ET ) I’ve wondered about a Rasheed Wallace for Brand swap but doubt Joe D wants to invest that much money right now on Brand

Dick (NY): How about Brand returning to Chicago? Any chance?

Chad Ford: (1:30 PM ET ) Sure. If the Sixers would take back Larry Hughes as part of the deal. It would give them long term cap relief, but that would be a huge admission that they screwed up signing Brand. I’m sure Chicago would throw either Tyrus Thomas or Joakim Noah in the deal.

I just found it bizarre that he would take the time to mention Brand so much.

Why? Unnamed sources are just an excuse for making things up – can’t prove or disprove anyone said it.

Almost EVERYONE is available in that GMs will listen – but like Cuban said – people want bargains – so Brand is under performing so they’ll talk about brand – but stefanski isn’t stupid enough to sell low – if he is – he’s dumber than Billy King

Would Marion for Miller/Green/filler be underselling?

yeah

with king’s moves i thought to myself “what an idiot” prior to the move. depending on what ed can get for Brand, I’m willing to listen.

Brands trade value is at its nadir – the team would have to pay the majority of the contract AND his on court value couldn’t possibly be lower – it’s a bad idea to consider at all

by jemagee on Jan 28, 2009 8:26 AM PST up reply actions

obviously not right now

but if he gets healthy and plays well before the deadline.

Since I’ve been advocating a trade of miller for about two years I have no problem with moving him (the inevitable but we need to get a point guard back protests notwithstanding – either way the sixers are point guard less after this season)…talk to the wolves – damn foye picked up his game at exactly the worst time for the sixers.

As for trading Brand – that would be stupid – a knee jerk reaction based on limited time with the new coach and comfort with the system – i wouldn’t be surprised if they did it – as it’s the M.O. of this poorly run organization – i’d just be very disappointed…Brand will be a good player next year – and healthier – so if he doesn’t fit he’ll still have trade value

Agree. And it would make Ed look really bad, unless he traded for another long term solution.

it’s the same thing miami did with shaq. in hindsight i’d say the ring was worth it.

My point was that adding brand wouldn’t get the suns a title – and shaq and nash are getting older and expiring soon – that’s a franchise that needs to blow it up in my opinion

by jemagee on Jan 28, 2009 8:24 AM PST up reply actions

i think they'd have a better chance with a healthy brand than amare

Except odds are that it takes more than the rest of the season for him to get fully healthy and integrate into his 3rd team in six months. Plus Terry Porter might be getting fired, or the GM might be getting fired, that’s a franchise in flux, they traded marion not only because of shaq but because they weren’t going to sign him long term and wanted to get rid of him…nash is a free agent after next season, amare can opt out, and fat boy is going to expire at some point – this is a franchise that needs to face reality

by jemagee on Jan 28, 2009 8:48 AM PST up reply actions

but will they?

WHo knows – there are still some pretty bad GMs and stupid owners in the NBA – which is why i think Amare and Elton COULD happen – but you gotta be ready to PAY amare or it’s only a one and a half season trade

by jemagee on Jan 28, 2009 9:02 AM PST up reply actions

We wish. Amare has much more value then Brand. They would want back someone like young or at least Speights and a pick.

true

but the suns time is now. shaqs playing really well. they could use someone who plays defense and doesn’t complain like amare to play aside him

kerr is ballsy enough to do it

hey – 80s pop culture is the worst thing to happen to any minds ever – worse than disco – worse than cocaine – worse than ecstacy – the movies and tv of the 80s have killed us.

PS – i hate when chad ford agrees with me (his comment about the pistons move being all about future and not this season)

You know – for all the grief memphis gets for ‘giving away’ pau gasol i wonder if you could get them to over pay for brand (not sure what players would constitute over paying) as a way of saving face :)

Memphis is going young. I doubt they want the cost/age of Brand.

Since we’re quoting ford a lot in this thread – on the mike miller front – he said the wolves are ‘talking tough’ and want more than just an expiring contract – young player and or pick

I’d give em jason smith if they gave us foye

About Brand...

I just wrote something up on this:
http://www.reclinergm.com/76ers-rumors-elton-brand-available-for-trade/

I wouldn’t just trade him, but if there is a deal that gets the Sixers from underneath his contract and in position to net a younger/better option I am always for improving the team.

I’d love to hear what type of offers teams would make for him (if any).
